CHAPTER 2 — The Accident Was Never an Accident

CHAPTER 2 — The Accident Was Never an Accident

Silence swallowed the grand foyer.

Even Vanessa stopped breathing.

The older FBI agent stepped forward and opened a leather case. His badge read Special Agent Daniel Mercer.

"Richard Hale?" he asked.

My father nodded weakly.

"I'm afraid your automobile accident is now part of an active federal investigation."

Vanessa recovered first.

"This is ridiculous," she snapped. "My husband simply lost control of his car."

Mercer never looked at her.

"Our forensic team disagrees."

He placed several glossy photographs on the marble coffee table.

The first showed Dad's black SUV after the crash.

The second showed the destroyed brake assembly.

The third...

Made my blood freeze.

A close-up photograph revealed a brake line that had been sliced almost perfectly clean.

Not worn.

Not broken.

Cut.

Dad stared at the image without blinking.

"What... what does that mean?"

The younger agent answered.

"It means someone tampered with your vehicle before you drove it."

Tyler laughed far too loudly.

"So? Anyone could've done that."

Mercer finally looked at him.

"Interesting response."

Tyler's confidence faltered.

"We never said we suspected murder."

The room became painfully quiet.

Vanessa forced herself to smile.

"My stepson is simply nervous. This entire situation has been traumatic."

I watched her carefully.

She wasn't frightened by the investigation.

She was frightened by what the investigation already knew.

Mercer continued.

"Three days before the accident, security footage from Hale Industries' underground garage disappeared."

Dad frowned.

"That footage is backed up automatically."

"It was."

Mercer nodded.

"Until someone with executive authorization permanently erased it."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You have no proof."

Mercer slid another document across the table.

"We do now."

It was a digital access log.

One executive credential had entered the security system at 11:42 p.m.

The account belonged to...

Vanessa Hale.

She didn't even touch the paper.

"Someone hacked my account."

The younger agent smiled slightly.

"They also hacked your fingerprint verification?"

No answer.

Dad slowly turned toward his wife.

His voice cracked.

"Vanessa..."

She refused to meet his eyes.

Instead she looked at me.

This time the hatred wasn't hidden.

"You."

Her voice trembled.

"You've been planning this."

"For six years," I replied.

"And you never noticed."

The private nurse entered quietly carrying Dad's medication.

She hesitated when she saw the agents.

Mercer introduced himself.

Her face visibly relaxed.

"I've been waiting for someone to believe me."

Vanessa spun around.

"Excuse me?"

The nurse swallowed hard.

"I documented everything."

She opened a small notebook.

Every missed dose.

Every unauthorized medication change.

Every time Vanessa ordered nurses out of the room before important legal meetings.

Every unexplained sedative.

Every signature session.

My father stared at the pages.

His hands began shaking again.

"I don't remember..."

"You weren't supposed to," the nurse whispered.

Tears filled Dad's eyes.

"They told me I had memory problems because of the accident."

The nurse slowly shook her head.

"No, sir."

"They gave you medication that caused confusion."

Vanessa exploded.

"She's lying!"

Mercer calmly produced another folder.

"The hospital pharmacy records suggest otherwise."

There it was.

Prescription after prescription.

Drugs Dad's physician had never authorized.

Drugs ordered using forged electronic approvals.

Every one approved under Vanessa's emergency power of attorney.

My father buried his face in his hands.

"Oh, God..."

Tyler suddenly moved toward the front door.

"I'm done listening to this."

The younger FBI agent stepped directly into his path.

"I'm afraid you're not leaving."

Tyler scoffed.

"You can't stop me."

The agent smiled politely.

"I absolutely can."

Then came the click.

Handcuffs.

Not on Tyler.

Yet.

But close enough that his face lost all color.

Vanessa noticed.

"So this is an arrest?"

"Not yet."

Mercer answered.

"But it may become one."

She inhaled slowly.

Then did something I didn't expect.

She smiled.

"You don't have enough."

Mercer didn't respond.

Instead he looked toward me.

"Ms. Hale?"

I nodded.

"It's time."

I pulled a small silver flash drive from my pocket.

Dad looked confused.

"I found it hidden behind Mom's old painting."

Vanessa's face became ghostly white.

"I almost missed it."

I handed it to Agent Mercer.

"Everything she deleted from the house security system..."

"I recovered."

Vanessa whispered only one word.

"No..."

Mercer connected the drive to his tablet.

Within seconds security footage appeared.

The timestamp read:

Two nights before the accident.

The garage.

Dad's SUV.

Vanessa walked into frame.

She wasn't alone.

Tyler followed carrying a toolbox.

The video had no audio.

It didn't need any.

Everyone watched Tyler disappear beneath the SUV.

Everyone watched Vanessa keep watch.

Everyone watched them leave twenty minutes later.

Dad looked physically ill.

"My God..."

Tyler backed away.

"This isn't what it looks like."

"No?"

I asked quietly.

"Then explain why you were under my father's brakes."

He couldn't.

Because there wasn't an explanation.

Only guilt.

Mercer closed the tablet.

"I think we've seen enough."

Vanessa suddenly straightened her shoulders.

"You'll never prove intent."

I smiled.

"You still think this is only about the accident."

Her expression changed.

For the first time...

She looked uncertain.

May you like

She had no idea how much evidence I actually had.

And I intended to reveal every single piece.
