CHAPTER 4 — The Witness They Thought They Had Buried

CHAPTER 4 — The Witness They Thought They Had Buried
Vanessa's scream echoed through the library long after the room fell silent.
"They're lying!" she shouted, pointing at me with a trembling finger. "Emma has wanted me gone since the day I married Richard!"
Dad looked at her with hollow eyes.
"No," he said quietly. "She wanted me happy."
The words struck harder than any accusation.
For years Vanessa had convinced him that I hated her out of jealousy, that every disagreement between us came from my refusal to accept my mother's death.
Now, with the original will spread across the antique table and the FBI standing only feet away, the illusion was crumbling.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
"You have one recording," she snapped. "One hidden safe. None of this proves I forced Richard to sign anything."
Agent Mercer remained calm.
"It doesn't."
A flicker of triumph crossed her face.
Then he continued.
"But our next witness might."
She frowned.
"What witness?"
Before anyone answered, the front doorbell rang.
The sound echoed through the mansion like a countdown.
Mercer's younger partner opened the front door.
An elderly man slowly stepped inside.
Gray hair.
Navy suit.
A worn leather briefcase.
Dad immediately recognized him.
"Arthur?"
The old man smiled sadly.
"Hello, Richard."
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"No..."
Arthur Benson had been the Hale family's attorney for nearly thirty years before suddenly retiring eight months earlier.
Vanessa had always claimed he'd left because of health problems.
Apparently, that wasn't true.
Arthur walked into the library carrying a thick stack of documents.
"I've spent eight months regretting my silence."
Dad stared at him in confusion.
"What happened?"
Arthur lowered his head.
"I was threatened."
The room froze.
He looked directly at Vanessa.
"She told me if I refused to notarize the new estate documents, my grandson's addiction records would become public."
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"He's lying."
Arthur calmly opened his briefcase.
"I expected you to say that."
Inside were printed emails.
Bank records.
Phone logs.
And dozens of screenshots.
Every threat.
Every demand.
Every payment.
One wire transfer caught everyone's attention.
Five hundred thousand dollars.
Sent from one of Hale Industries' holding companies into an offshore account controlled by Tyler.
Agent Mercer looked at Tyler.
"Care to explain this?"
Tyler swallowed.
"It was... consulting."
"For what?"
Silence.
Arthur sighed.
"They paid me to resign."
Dad looked physically sick.
"You quit because you thought they would hurt your family?"
Arthur nodded.
"I hated myself every day afterward."
He pulled out one final envelope.
"I couldn't stop them then."
He handed it to Mercer.
"But I secretly copied everything."
Inside were certified originals of every estate document Vanessa had altered.
Each page contained handwritten notes from Arthur identifying every forged clause added after Richard supposedly signed.
The evidence was devastating.
Vanessa took one slow step backward.
For the first time since I'd returned home...
She looked trapped.
Dad turned toward her.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Did you ever love me?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh that echoed through the room.
"You were useful."
Dad closed his eyes.
"My money."
"My name."
"My company."
She shrugged.
"You were already falling apart after your first wife died."
Every word landed like another knife.
"You wanted someone to save you."
She smiled cruelly.
"So I did."
I watched my father's shoulders collapse under the weight of the truth.
The woman he'd trusted for nearly a decade had never loved him.
She had simply been patient.
Waiting.
Planning.
Collecting.
And when the accident left him vulnerable...
She moved in for the final prize.
Just as Agent Mercer reached for his handcuffs, another voice echoed from the hallway.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
It was the housekeeper, Maria.
She had worked for our family since before I was born.
She looked terrified.
"I have something."
She carried an old metal lockbox.
"I've been hiding this."
Vanessa's eyes widened in panic.
"No..."
Maria placed the box on the table.
"I found it the night after Mr. Hale's accident."
Inside were three burner phones.
Several USB drives.
A ledger.
And a small velvet pouch.
Mercer opened the pouch.
A collection of expensive rings spilled onto the table.
Dad frowned.
"I've never seen those."
Maria nodded.
"They belonged to Mrs. Hale."
Vanessa interrupted sharply.
"So?"
Maria looked directly at her.
"You accepted them from a man named Victor Sloan."
Mercer immediately recognized the name.
"The private equity executive?"
Maria nodded.
"I overheard them talking."
She hesitated.
"They said Richard's accident happened sooner than expected."
The room fell completely silent.
Dad stared at Vanessa.
"Sooner... than expected?"
Maria began crying.
"I wanted to tell you."
"But they said no one would believe the maid."
Mercer carefully picked up one of the burner phones.
"If these contain what I think they contain..."
May you like
He looked at Vanessa.
"...this case just became much bigger."
