CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING
The convoy glided through the streets of Miami in complete silence.
Inside the back seat of the armored SUV, Emily stared out the window as city lights blurred against the rain-speckled glass.
For the first time all day, she allowed herself to breathe.
Blake rested his hand over hers.
"I'm sorry."
Emily looked at him in surprise.
"For what?"
"For revealing the truth about the wedding."
"You asked me not to."
Emily shook her head.
"They would have kept lying."
A faint smile crossed Blake's face.
"They won't anymore."
His phone vibrated.
The caller ID displayed only one name.
Marcus Hale.
Head of Campbell Security.
Blake answered immediately.
"What happened?"
Marcus didn't waste a second.
"Sir, we have a problem."
Blake's expression hardened.
"What kind of problem?"
"There has been a leak."
Emily turned toward him.
Marcus continued.
"The board received an anonymous package this afternoon."
Blake's jaw tightened.
"What was inside?"
"A copy of your adoption records."
Silence.
The air inside the SUV suddenly felt impossibly heavy.
Emily looked at Blake.
He rarely showed emotion.
But now...
His face had gone pale.
Marcus spoke again.
"Someone knows."
"They know your real identity."
Thirty minutes later.
The Campbell Estate.
Every senior executive from Campbell Global had gathered inside the private conference room.
No one spoke.
A thick file lay in the center of the table.
Blake opened it.
Inside were newspaper clippings dating back thirty-two years.
A hospital fire.
A missing infant.
An unsolved kidnapping.
Photographs yellowed with age.
Emily quietly read the headline.
BABY DISAPPEARS DURING HOSPITAL EVACUATION.
She looked at Blake.
"You were that baby."
He nodded once.
"I wasn't born Blake Campbell."
The room remained silent.
"My birth name..."
He hesitated.
"...was Daniel Lawson."
Emily reached for his hand.
Blake continued.
"My parents died in what everyone believed was a car accident."
Marcus interrupted quietly.
"It wasn't."
Another folder slid across the table.
"It was an assassination."
Emily stared.
"What?"
Marcus opened the file.
"Thirty-two years ago, the Lawson family owned the largest shipping empire on the East Coast."
"They refused to sell."
"Three executives arranged their deaths."
Emily whispered,
"And Blake?"
"They couldn't find him."
Blake finished the sentence himself.
"A nurse escaped the burning hospital with me."
"She changed my name."
"She disappeared."
"I was adopted by the Campbells two years later."
Emily struggled to process everything.
"So all these years..."
"You never knew."
Blake nodded.
"I learned the truth only six months ago."
The exact week...
He married Emily.
"I kept it secret because the investigation wasn't finished."
Marcus placed one final photograph on the table.
Emily's heart skipped.
The image showed a much younger Richard Carter.
Standing beside one of the executives accused of ordering the Lawson murders.
Emily's blood ran cold.
"No..."
Marcus looked directly at her.
"Your father didn't order the killings."
"But he worked for the men who did."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Blake closed the folder.
"I prayed that connection wasn't real."
"It is."
Emily slowly sat down.
Her entire body trembled.
"So today's investigation..."
"It wasn't just about financial crimes."
Blake nodded.
"It opened a door."
"And now..."
"The people responsible know I'm alive."
Across the city.
Inside a luxurious penthouse.
A silver-haired man watched news coverage of Richard Carter's arrest.
He smiled.
Then he noticed another image.
Blake Campbell leaving the wedding.
The old man's smile disappeared.
He leaned closer to the television.
"No..."
His whiskey glass slipped from his hand.
It shattered across the marble floor.
"Impossible."
He grabbed an old photograph from a locked drawer.
A toddler.
Dark eyes.
The same unmistakable face.
After thirty-two years...
The last Lawson had returned.
The old man picked up his phone.
"Find him."
A cold voice answered.
"Alive?"
May you like
The man stared at Blake's image.
"...No."
