CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ACCOUNT

CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ACCOUNT

The wedding reception dissolved into panic.

Guests hurried toward the exits, desperate to avoid being photographed anywhere near Richard Carter.

Luxury cars pulled away one after another.

Within fifteen minutes, the lavish celebration looked like an abandoned movie set.

Only close family remained.

And the federal investigators.

Richard stared at the thick investigation file as though it were a death sentence.

"I've done nothing wrong."

The lead investigator looked at him calmly.

"We'll let the evidence decide."

He opened the first folder.

"Shall we begin?"

Richard forced himself to nod.

The investigator removed several bank statements.

"Do you recognize Carter Development Holdings?"

"Of course."

"You own one hundred percent."

"Yes."

The investigator laid another document beside it.

"What about Horizon Consulting?"

Richard frowned.

"It's a contractor."

"No."

The investigator looked him in the eye.

"It's a shell company."

Another document.

"Registered to a vacant office."

Another.

"The director died eight years ago."

Another.

"The account received forty-two million dollars from your company."

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"I don't manage every transaction."

"Your signature appears on every approval."

Silence.

Then another voice spoke.

"I warned him."

Everyone turned.

It was Richard's former chief financial officer.

Michael Sanders.

He had quietly entered with his attorney.

Richard stared at him.

"You..."

Michael nodded.

"I resigned because I refused to keep signing false reports."

He handed investigators a flash drive.

"Everything is there."

Emails.

Contracts.

Recorded meetings.

Hidden ledgers.

Years of evidence.

Richard lunged forward.

"You traitor!"

Security officers blocked him instantly.

Michael's voice remained steady.

"No."

"I was loyal."

"I just refused to become a criminal."

The investigator accepted the drive.

"This confirms what we've been tracing."

Margaret suddenly whispered,

"Richard..."

Her husband wouldn't look at her.

She asked the question she feared most.

"Did you really steal all that money?"

He remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Margaret stepped backward as though struck.

Penelope collapsed into a chair, still wearing her wedding gown.

"My God..."

"My entire wedding..."

"My entire life..."

"It was all paid for with stolen money?"

Richard shouted,

"I did it for this family!"

Emily finally spoke.

"No."

"You did it for yourself."

He turned angrily.

"You know nothing about sacrifice."

Emily laughed softly.

"No."

"I know exactly what sacrifice is."

"I sacrificed my dreams so this family could survive."

"I sacrificed my savings for Grandma."

"I sacrificed my inheritance for Penelope."

"I sacrificed years trying to earn love that was never offered."

She looked around the nearly empty courtyard.

"And today..."

"I'm done sacrificing."

Blake squeezed her hand.

"Then let's go home."

Emily smiled.

Home.

Such a simple word.

Yet tonight...

For the first time in her life...

It finally meant a place where she was loved.

As Blake and Emily stepped into the waiting SUV, Richard called after them one last time.

"Emily!"

She paused but did not turn around.

"If they send me to prison..."

"...will you ever forgive me?"

Emily stood in silence for several seconds.

Then she answered quietly.

"I hope one day I'll find peace."

She looked toward the dark Miami skyline.

"But forgiveness..."

"...is something you should have thought about before you pushed your daughter into a fountain."

The SUV doors closed.

The convoy pulled away.

Behind them, police lights painted the abandoned wedding venue in flashing shades of red and blue.

May you like

The Carter family's public humiliation had only just begun.

And by sunrise, a secret hidden inside Blake Campbell's own past would threaten everything he and Emily had built together.
