CHAPTER 2 — THE BILLIONAIRE'S WIFE

CHAPTER 2 — THE BILLIONAIRE'S WIFE
Not a single champagne glass moved.
Not a single violin continued playing.
The entire wedding reception at the Royal Palms Plaza stood frozen as Blake Campbell kept one arm around the drenched woman everyone had mocked only moments earlier.
Water dripped from Emily Carter's hair onto the expensive Italian shoes of Miami's most powerful billionaire.
He didn't care.
Instead, he reached into his pocket, removed a spotless white handkerchief, and gently dried the tear that had escaped from the corner of her eye.
"Did anyone hurt you?" he asked quietly.
Emily looked at him.
The rage she'd held inside for twenty-eight years suddenly felt strangely distant.
"They're not worth crying over," she whispered.
Blake nodded once.
"Good."
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
Every guest leaned forward to hear every word.
Across the courtyard, Richard Carter finally found his voice.
"M-Mr. Campbell!"
He hurried forward with an awkward smile plastered across his face.
"What an incredible surprise! Had I known you were attending, we would have prepared a proper welcome."
Blake didn't even glance at him.
His attention never left Emily.
Richard cleared his throat.
"I apologize for the... family misunderstanding you witnessed."
Emily almost laughed.
Family misunderstanding?
He had thrown his own daughter into a fountain while hundreds applauded.
Penelope hurried over, clutching her wedding dress.
Her expression had transformed completely.
Gone was the mocking smile.
Now she wore the fake sweetness Emily knew all too well.
"Emily..."
She reached for her sister's hand.
"We were only joking. You know how Dad gets during emotional events."
Emily stepped backward.
"You laughed."
Penelope blinked.
"What?"
"You laughed while he pushed me into the fountain."
Silence.
Several guests lowered their eyes.
Because it was true.
Everyone had seen it.
Everyone had laughed.
Penelope forced another smile.
"Oh, come on. Don't be dramatic."
Before Emily could answer, Blake finally turned toward Penelope.
One look.
That was all.
The bride immediately stopped speaking.
His eyes were cold enough to freeze fire.
"You think attempted humiliation is comedy?"
Penelope swallowed.
"I... I didn't mean—"
"No."
Blake cut her off.
"You meant exactly what you did."
The courtyard became so quiet the fountain behind them sounded deafening.
Richard quickly stepped between them.
"Mr. Campbell, surely there's no need for unpleasantness today. It's my younger daughter's wedding."
Blake looked at him for several long seconds.
"You have two daughters?"
Richard frowned.
"Of course."
"Interesting."
Blake's voice remained calm.
"Because for the last twenty minutes, I've watched you behave as though you only have one."
Several guests shifted uncomfortably.
One elderly investor slowly placed his champagne on the table.
Nobody wanted to be seen supporting Richard anymore.
Richard laughed nervously.
"I'm afraid you've misunderstood our family dynamic."
"No."
Blake answered.
"I understood it perfectly."
He turned toward the crowd.
"I watched a father publicly assault his daughter."
Richard's smile disappeared.
"I watched a mother refuse to defend her child."
Margaret Carter couldn't meet his eyes.
"I watched a sister celebrate abuse."
Penelope's face flushed crimson.
"And I watched more than two hundred people applaud."
The applause that had echoed through the garden only minutes earlier now felt like a crime scene replaying inside everyone's head.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Blake spoke again.
"I'll remember every face."
A chill swept through Miami's elite.
Because everyone knew exactly what those words meant.
Blake Campbell rarely attended public events.
But when he remembered someone...
Banks remembered.
Investors remembered.
Corporate boards remembered.
Richard forced himself to smile again.
"Mr. Campbell, perhaps you're overreacting. Emily isn't exactly—"
"Careful."
Blake's voice dropped.
Dangerously low.
Richard stopped talking.
"You've spoken about my wife enough for one lifetime."
The world seemed to stop.
My...
Wife?
The word exploded through the garden like thunder.
Gasps erupted from every direction.
"What did he say?"
"His wife?"
"Did I hear that correctly?"
Penelope stared at Emily.
"No."
She laughed weakly.
"That's impossible."
Emily herself remained silent.
Blake slowly reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket.
He removed a small black leather wallet.
From it came a folded legal document.
Then another.
Finally...
A wedding certificate.
He handed it to the stunned wedding planner standing closest.
"Read it."
The woman hesitated.
Her hands shook as she unfolded the official document.
Her voice cracked.
"Certificate of Marriage..."
She looked up.
"...issued six months ago..."
Another pause.
"Husband..."
She swallowed hard.
"Blake Alexander Campbell."
The silence became unbearable.
"Wife..."
She stared directly at Emily.
"Emily Rose Carter."
Someone dropped an entire tray of crystal glasses.
They shattered across the marble floor.
Richard snatched the certificate.
His eyes raced across the signatures.
The official county seal.
The notarized documents.
The registration number.
Everything was authentic.
His hands began trembling violently.
"No..."
"This can't be real."
Emily finally spoke.
"It is."
Richard looked at her as though seeing her for the first time.
"You married him?"
Six months.
His own daughter had been married to the wealthiest man in Miami for half a year...
...and he hadn't known.
Penelope grabbed the certificate.
Her face drained of every trace of color.
"This is fake!"
Blake smiled.
It wasn't a pleasant smile.
"My attorneys can verify its authenticity."
His head of security stepped forward carrying a sleek silver briefcase.
He opened it.
Inside sat dozens of legal folders.
Prenuptial agreements.
Marriage registration.
Photographs.
Witness statements.
Every document imaginable.
Blake believed in preparation.
Especially when dealing with people who confused cruelty with power.
Margaret suddenly burst into tears.
"Emily..."
"We didn't know."
Emily looked at her mother.
"You never asked."
Margaret froze.
Because it was true.
Not once.
Not one phone call.
Not one birthday.
Not one holiday invitation.
For six months, no one had cared enough to ask how Emily was living.
Richard slowly looked around.
He noticed something terrifying.
The guests were backing away from him.
Not dramatically.
Not obviously.
Just enough.
Creating distance.
As if standing too close to him had suddenly become dangerous.
His biggest investor quietly checked his phone.
His lawyer refused eye contact.
Even his new son-in-law looked ready to disappear.
Richard's heartbeat accelerated.
Then his own phone rang.
He answered automatically.
"Richard Carter speaking."
The color vanished from his face.
"What?"
Another pause.
"Cancelled?"
His breathing became uneven.
"All three contracts?"
More silence.
Then—
"No... there must be some mistake..."
The call ended.
Before he could recover...
His phone rang again.
Then again.
And again.
One after another.
Each call delivered the same message.
Funding suspended.
Meetings cancelled.
Partnerships postponed indefinitely.
Credit reviews initiated.
Within three minutes...
Everything he'd spent thirty-five years building began collapsing.
Not because Blake had made a single phone call.
But because Miami's business world had just witnessed something priceless.
A man willing to throw away his own daughter for public entertainment...
...could never be trusted in private negotiations.
Richard slowly raised his head.
For the first time in his life...
May you like
He realized he was no longer the most powerful person in the room.
And Blake Campbell hadn't even begun.
