CHAPTER 7 — THE LETTER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 7 — THE LETTER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The call lasted only nine seconds.
Yet those nine seconds left the room colder than any winter night.
Alejandro stared at his phone.
The number was already unavailable.
His cybersecurity team rushed to trace it.
Five minutes later, the answer came.
"It was routed through six countries."
"Disposable satellite connection."
"No location."
Whoever had called him had planned every detail.
They wanted him to know one thing.
They were still watching.
Alejandro looked down at the unopened envelope.
The wax seal remained intact.
For Elena. Not for Alejandro.
Every instinct told him to open it.
Every warning told him not to.
He closed his eyes.
Then made a decision.
"This belongs to Elena."
At the hospital...
Elena sat quietly beside the window, wrapped in a blanket.
The bruises on her wrists had begun to fade, but the deeper wounds remained hidden behind her eyes.
Alejandro entered without speaking.
He simply placed the envelope in front of her.
She frowned.
"What is this?"
"I don't know."
He pointed to the handwriting.
"I think my mother left it."
Elena's expression changed.
Slowly, she ran her fingertips across the faded ink.
"I've seen this handwriting before."
Alejandro looked up.
"What?"
She closed her eyes.
"In the basement."
"The first week after I was taken."
"I found words carved beneath the wooden bed."
"They said..."
She whispered the sentence from memory.
"If you are reading this, hope is still alive."
"I thought I imagined it."
"But..."
She looked at the envelope.
"It was the same handwriting."
Alejandro's heart pounded.
His mother had been inside that prison.
Not decades ago.
Recently enough to leave messages behind.
With trembling hands, Elena broke the wax seal.
Inside was a single folded letter.
And a tiny brass key taped to the back.
The room fell silent.
Elena unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was elegant despite obvious signs of haste.
She began reading aloud.
Elena,
If this letter has reached you, then Alejandro finally found you.
First, know this:
None of what happened to you was your fault.
They wanted you to believe you had been forgotten.
You never were.
Alejandro searched every day.
I know because I watched him.
Elena's voice cracked.
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
She continued.
You are stronger than they expected.
Stronger than I was.
That is why you are still alive.
Alejandro's hands trembled.
"She watched me?"
He whispered.
"How?"
Elena continued reading.
Do not trust every memory you have.
They drugged you repeatedly.
They mixed truth with lies until you could no longer tell them apart.
Some of what you remember never happened.
Some of what you forgot...
Was taken from you on purpose.
The trauma specialist standing quietly in the room inhaled sharply.
Memory manipulation.
Repeated sedation.
Psychological conditioning.
Everything Elena had experienced suddenly made horrifying sense.
Elena turned to the final page.
Her face slowly lost all color.
Alejandro immediately noticed.
"What is it?"
She couldn't answer.
Her lips trembled violently.
"Elena..."
She handed him the letter.
Unable to speak.
Alejandro looked at the final paragraph.
His world stopped.
Alejandro,
If Elena has survived, there is one truth you must never hide from her.
On the night she disappeared...
She was not the only person taken.
His breathing became shallow.
Below the sentence...
One final line had been written.
Your daughter is alive.
The paper slipped from his hands.
The room fell completely silent.
"Our..."
Alejandro couldn't finish the sentence.
He looked at Elena.
She was crying uncontrollably.
"I was pregnant..."
she whispered.
"I remembered losing the baby."
"The doctors..."
"They told me..."
She suddenly stopped.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
Fragments of memory slammed into her mind.
Bright hospital lights.
Hands holding her down.
Someone saying,
"The infant is healthy."
Another voice.
"She'll never remember giving birth."
Elena screamed.
The sound echoed through the hospital corridor.
Doctors rushed into the room.
Her heart monitor began sounding frantic alarms.
Alejandro held her as she shook violently.
"We have a daughter..."
he whispered in disbelief.
"They stole our child."
At that exact moment...
Across the city...
Inside an abandoned chapel...
A little girl around three years old sat quietly at a wooden table drawing with crayons.
She hummed softly to herself.
An elderly woman with silver hair watched from the shadows.
She smiled.
"Your parents are getting closer."
The little girl looked up.
"When can I meet Mommy?"
The old woman gently brushed the child's hair.
"Soon."
"Very soon."
She picked up a framed photograph from the table.
It showed Alejandro and Elena on their wedding day.
The old woman traced Elena's face with one finger.
Then she whispered with chilling satisfaction,
"They've finally reached the part of the story..."
"...exactly as I planned."
The camera pulled back.
The abandoned chapel wasn't abandoned at all.
Hidden beneath it...
Dozens of surveillance monitors glowed in the darkness.
Every screen displayed a live feed.
The hospital.
The police station.
The Castillo Estate.
Even Alejandro's private office.
Someone had been watching every move.
In the center monitor, the elderly woman pressed a button.
A new camera feed appeared.
It showed Alejandro kneeling beside Elena in the hospital room.
She smiled.
Then spoke a name no one had heard in decades.
"Welcome back, Isabella."
From the shadows behind her...
A woman stepped forward.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably alive.
Alejandro's mother.
Isabella Castillo.
She had been alive all along.
And she wasn't the prisoner's captive anymore.
She was standing beside the woman everyone feared as The Matron.
With tears in her eyes, Isabella whispered,
May you like
"I'm sorry, Alejandro..."
"...I couldn't save your daughter."
