CHAPTER 3 — THE ROOM BENEATH THE HOUSE

CHAPTER 3 — THE ROOM BENEATH THE HOUSE

The basement door groaned open.

A cold draft rolled up the stone staircase.

It carried the smell of damp concrete, bleach... and something far worse.

Fear.

Alejandro descended first.

His security team followed close behind, flashlights sweeping across the darkness.

The mansion above had always felt grand.

The basement felt like another world.

Every footstep echoed through the narrow corridor.

At the end stood a thick steel door.

There were no windows.

Only three heavy locks.

One of the guards swallowed hard.

"Sir... this door was hidden behind a false wine rack."

Alejandro stared at it.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

"Break it."

A steel battering ram slammed into the door.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The final impact ripped the locks from the frame.

The door burst inward.

Silence.

No one moved.

Flashlights slowly illuminated the room.

It was small.

Bare concrete walls.

A thin mattress on the floor.

A rusted sink.

A bucket in the corner.

And bolted to the wall...

A length of heavy chain.

Alejandro stopped breathing.

The chain ended in a pair of worn leather restraints.

Dark stains covered the floor beneath them.

One of the guards whispered,

"My God..."

Alejandro walked forward like a man in a nightmare.

He knelt beside the restraints.

The leather was cracked.

The buckles had been repaired over and over again.

This hadn't been used once.

It had been used for years.

He touched the chain.

It was still warm.

His hand began to shake violently.

"No..."

Behind him, another investigator opened a metal cabinet.

Inside were neatly labeled plastic folders.

Each carried a date.

Three years' worth.

"What is this?"

The investigator carefully opened the first file.

His face turned pale.

"Medical records."

Alejandro stood.

"What kind of medical records?"

The man hesitated.

"Daily reports."

"Body weight."

"Blood pressure."

"Sedative dosage."

"Nutritional intake."

The room fell silent.

Someone had documented Elena's imprisonment with horrifying precision.

Another guard found a cardboard box.

Inside were dozens of disposable syringes.

Empty sedative vials.

Prescription labels with fake patient names.

Alejandro picked one up.

The expiration date was only two months old.

Whoever had been drugging Elena...

Hadn't stopped until very recently.

A younger officer searched beneath the mattress.

"Sir..."

He pulled out a tiny object wrapped in cloth.

It was a silver wedding ring.

Alejandro recognized it instantly.

His own.

The ring he had slipped onto Elena's finger on their wedding day.

He remembered laughing as it almost fell into the ocean during their beach ceremony.

Elena had promised never to take it off.

Now he knew she hadn't.

Someone had ripped it from her hand.

Alejandro closed his fist around the ring.

His knees nearly gave out.

Above them, a scream echoed through the mansion.

Vivian.

The sound was followed by frantic shouting.

A security radio crackled.

"Sir!"

Alejandro grabbed it.

"What happened?"

"We found another victim."

His heart stopped.

"What?"

"In the east wing."

"An elderly groundskeeper."

"He's alive... barely."

"We think he's been locked inside a maintenance room."

Alejandro sprinted upstairs.

The groundskeeper was lying on the floor when Alejandro arrived.

He looked to be in his seventies.

His beard was overgrown.

One eye was swollen shut.

His wrists were covered with scars.

Paramedics surrounded him.

As they lifted him onto a stretcher, the old man grabbed Alejandro's sleeve with surprising strength.

"You..."

His voice was rough.

"You're... her husband..."

Alejandro knelt beside him.

"Yes."

The old man's eyes filled with tears.

"I tried..."

"I tried to help her..."

"What happened?"

The man coughed violently.

"Every time I left food..."

"Every time I tried to unlock the room..."

"She found out."

"Who?"

"Vivian."

The old man's entire body trembled.

"She beat me."

"Locked me away."

"Told everyone I'd stolen from the family."

Alejandro's jaw tightened.

"Why didn't anyone call the police?"

The old man laughed bitterly.

"She owned everyone."

"The local officers."

"The doctor."

"The lawyer."

"They all believed her."

He looked directly into Alejandro's eyes.

"No..."

"They were paid to believe her."

The words struck like lightning.

This wasn't the work of one cruel woman.

This had been an organized conspiracy.

At that exact moment...

One of the digital forensic specialists rushed into the foyer carrying a laptop.

"Mr. Castillo!"

"We've accessed the mansion's surveillance server."

Alejandro turned.

"What did you find?"

The technician's face had gone white.

"There are over forty thousand hours of recordings."

"Most are of Elena."

Alejandro's stomach twisted.

"But that's not the worst part."

He connected the laptop to the massive television in the living room.

The screen flickered.

Security footage appeared.

Date: October 14 — Three Years Ago.

Alejandro froze.

That was the day Elena disappeared.

The footage showed Elena walking through the garden, talking on her phone.

She looked happy.

Completely unaware.

Then...

A black van entered through the rear service gate.

Not forced.

Not breaking in.

The gate opened from the inside.

Two masked men stepped out.

They grabbed Elena from behind.

She fought.

She screamed.

She kicked one of them hard enough to make him stumble.

Then a third person walked into frame.

The room went silent.

The figure removed her sunglasses.

Vivian.

She smiled.

She calmly injected something into Elena's neck.

Within seconds...

Elena's body went limp.

Alejandro felt the blood drain from his face.

The video continued.

Vivian looked directly into one of the security cameras.

Then...

She smiled.

Raised her wine glass toward the lens...

And toasted it.

As if celebrating.

The footage ended.

No one in the room spoke.

One security officer quietly whispered,

"She recorded the kidnapping..."

"And kept the evidence."

Alejandro stared at the frozen image of Vivian's smiling face.

He had never seen evil look so ordinary.

Just then, another technician interrupted the silence.

"Sir..."

His hands were shaking.

"We found one more file."

"What file?"

"It isn't surveillance."

"It's labeled..."

He looked down at the screen.

Then slowly looked back up.

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"'Replacement Plan.'"

Alejandro's expression hardened.

"What replacement?"

The technician clicked the folder open.

The first photograph appeared on the screen.

Alejandro's heart stopped.

It wasn't a business document.

It wasn't financial fraud.

It was a bridal portrait.

Vivian...

Wearing a wedding dress.

Standing beside Alejandro.

The image had been digitally altered so perfectly that it looked real.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

"Once Elena accepts that no one is coming... Alejandro will eventually accept that she's gone."

"Grief always creates room for someone new."

Alejandro crushed the silver wedding ring in his fist until blood trickled between his fingers.

Then he looked toward the hallway where Vivian was being restrained.

His voice was calm.

Far too calm.

"Don't let her leave."

"Because after what I just saw..."

He paused, his eyes burning with cold fury.

"...I'm no longer interested in what she has to say."

"I'm interested in who helped her."

Somewhere outside the mansion...

The sound of approaching police sirens echoed through the valley.

May you like

But Alejandro had the chilling feeling that the real nightmare...

Had only just begun.
