CHAPTER 5 — THE SURVIVORS SPEAK

CHAPTER 5 — THE SURVIVORS SPEAK

The rescue team descended into the underground chamber.

Flashlights sliced through the darkness.

The smell hit them first.

Stale air.

Mold.

Bleach.

And years of hopelessness.

The bunker was far larger than anyone had imagined.

It stretched beneath the greenhouse like a maze.

Small rooms lined both sides of a narrow corridor.

Heavy steel doors.

Tiny barred windows.

Numbers painted above each entrance.

Not names.

Numbers.

As though the people inside had never been human.

A police officer forced open the first door.

A woman in her fifties recoiled into the corner, shielding her face.

"No..." she whispered. "Please... not again."

"It's okay," the officer said gently. "We're here to help."

She stared at the uniforms in disbelief.

Then she began to cry.

One by one, the remaining doors were opened.

Inside were seven women.

The youngest couldn't have been older than twenty.

The oldest appeared to be nearly seventy.

Some were malnourished.

Some could barely stand.

Others stared blankly ahead, as though they had forgotten how to react to freedom.

The paramedics rushed in.

Blankets.

Water.

Medical kits.

The bunker transformed from a prison into an emergency triage center.

Alejandro stood frozen.

This had all existed...

Beneath his own home.

Elena slowly approached the entrance.

She stopped at the top of the ladder.

Her breathing became uneven.

"I know this place..."

Alejandro immediately took her hand.

"You don't have to go down."

She looked at him with quiet determination.

"I need to."

Together, they descended.

The moment Elena stepped into the bunker...

One of the women looked up.

Her eyes widened.

"Number Eight..."

The words echoed through the chamber.

Every survivor turned toward Elena.

One after another...

They began crying.

A gray-haired woman struggled to her feet.

"You made it..."

Elena burst into tears.

The two women embraced, sobbing uncontrollably.

Alejandro stared in confusion.

"What did she call you?"

Elena wiped her face.

"Number Eight."

Alejandro frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Before Elena could answer, the gray-haired survivor spoke.

"Vivian took our names."

"She said names gave people hope."

"So she replaced them with numbers."

The room fell silent.

"I was Number One."

She pointed toward another woman.

"She was Number Three."

Another survivor whispered,

"I was Number Six."

Alejandro looked around the bunker.

Eight cells.

Eight numbers.

Eight prisoners.

His chest tightened.

Elena had not suffered alone.

She had lived among forgotten souls.

Hours later...

The survivors were transported to a nearby hospital under police protection.

Doctors, psychologists, and forensic specialists flooded the emergency department.

News helicopters circled overhead.

The story was beginning to leak.

But inside a private hospital room, Alejandro sat beside Elena.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, she broke the silence.

"I thought you stopped looking."

Alejandro looked up sharply.

"What?"

She stared at her hands.

"Vivian showed me newspapers."

"They said you moved on."

"That you sold my paintings."

"That you were dating."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

"None of it was true."

"I know that now."

She smiled sadly.

"But after the first year..."

"I believed her."

"I thought..."

Her voice cracked.

"...I thought I wasn't worth finding anymore."

Alejandro's eyes filled with tears.

He reached into his pocket.

Slowly...

He opened his hand.

The silver wedding ring rested in his palm.

Elena gasped.

"You kept it..."

"I found it."

He gently slid it back onto her finger.

It still fit perfectly.

For the first time in three years...

She smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

At that same moment...

Across town...

Vivian sat alone inside an interrogation room.

She looked exhausted.

Disheveled.

Yet strangely calm.

A detective placed a thick folder on the table.

"We've recovered the surveillance videos."

No response.

"The bunker."

Silence.

"The financial records."

Nothing.

"The forged documents."

Vivian simply smiled.

The detective leaned forward.

"Why?"

Vivian laughed softly.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"I didn't build the prison."

The detective's pen stopped moving.

"What did you say?"

Vivian looked directly into his eyes.

"I inherited it."

A chill swept through the room.

"From whom?"

Vivian's smile slowly disappeared.

"My mother."

The detective frowned.

"Your mother died fifteen years ago."

"No."

Vivian whispered.

"That's what everyone believes."

She leaned closer.

"My mother is alive."

The detective's pulse quickened.

"Where is she?"

Vivian chuckled.

"If I tell you..."

"You'll never sleep again."

That evening...

Forensic investigators continued searching every hidden room beneath the Castillo Estate.

Inside an old maintenance tunnel, one technician noticed something unusual.

A section of concrete wall sounded hollow.

Construction workers carefully broke through it.

Behind the wall...

They discovered a small steel safe.

It was covered in dust.

The combination lock had long since rusted shut.

The safe was forced open.

Inside were only three items.

A faded photograph.

A bundle of handwritten letters.

And...

An old cassette tape.

The photograph showed two young women standing together.

One was unmistakably a teenage Vivian.

The other...

Alejandro felt his breath catch.

It was his mother.

Standing beside Vivian.

Both of them smiling.

As if they had known each other for years.

Alejandro's hands began to shake.

"That's impossible..."

His mother had died when he was seventeen.

Or so he had always believed.

The lead investigator slowly picked up the cassette tape.

A handwritten label was attached to it.

"Play only if Alejandro finds the truth."

The room fell silent.

No one reached for the tape recorder.

Because suddenly...

The investigation wasn't only about Elena anymore.

It was becoming a mystery that reached back decades.

May you like

And somehow...

Alejandro's own family was buried inside it.
