Chapter 5 - The Price of Silence

The next morning, the Roberts mansion looked nothing like the place where the family had celebrated Christmas for decades.
The Christmas decorations were still hanging.
The giant tree still stood proudly in the corner.
The expensive ornaments still reflected the morning sunlight.
But the warmth was gone.
The laughter was gone.
All that remained was fear.
Robert Roberts sat in his study, staring at the financial reports scattered across his desk.
Numbers he couldn't accept.
Contracts disappearing.
Investors calling.
Partners demanding answers.
His family empire, built over thirty years, was suddenly shaking.
And the reason was sitting in every headline.
"VANCE GLOBAL CHAIRMAN ORDERS STRATEGIC REVIEW OF NOVA PARTNERSHIPS."
The media didn't mention Elena's name.
They didn't need to.
The business world already knew.
When Chairman Vance moved...
Entire industries moved with her.
David spent the night calling everyone he knew.
Former colleagues.
Executives.
Friends he had spent years impressing.
Nobody answered.
The ones who did gave the same response.
"I'm sorry, David. There's nothing I can do."
But David knew the truth.
Nobody wanted to stand against Elena.
Not because she was cruel.
Because she was right.
At noon, David finally found courage to call Mark.
The phone rang several times.
Then answered.
"Mark."
David immediately started talking.
"You need to convince her."
Silence.
"Your wife is destroying everything."
Mark's voice was cold.
"No."
David froze.
"No?"
"No, David."
"You destroyed it yourself."
David laughed bitterly.
"You're really taking her side?"
Mark looked through the window of Elena's penthouse office.
For the first time, he was seeing the world she lived in.
A world he never knew existed.
Employees greeted her with respect.
Executives waited for her decisions.
People trusted her.
Not because she had money.
Because she had earned their trust.
"She gave us five years," Mark said quietly.
"Five years of pretending."
"Five years of being insulted."
"And last night, you laughed when her daughter cried."
David became silent.
Meanwhile, Elena sat inside her private office overlooking the city.
The room was enormous.
Glass walls.
Modern artwork.
A view of thousands of buildings below.
Yet she wasn't thinking about business.
She was looking at a small photograph on her desk.
A picture of Lily wearing the original rainbow dress.
The night before, Lily had finally fallen asleep after crying for hours.
She had asked one question before closing her eyes.
"Mommy..."
"Was my dress really ugly?"
That question had hurt more than any insult.
Because Lily wasn't asking about fabric.
She was asking if she was enough.
Elena clenched her hands.
For years she had handled billion-dollar negotiations.
She had faced competitors.
Lawsuits.
Corporate attacks.
Nothing had prepared her for seeing her little girl broken by people who claimed to love her.
Secretary Kim entered quietly.
"Chairman."
Elena looked up.
"Yes?"
"We have completed the investigation."
"Regarding David?"
"Yes."
She placed a folder on the desk.
"The evidence confirms financial misconduct."
"Unauthorized gifts."
"Conflict of interest."
"And falsified performance reports."
Elena opened the folder.
She wasn't surprised.
But one detail caught her attention.
"Mark knew nothing about this?"
Secretary Kim shook her head.
"No evidence suggests he was involved."
Elena nodded.
"Good."
Secretary Kim hesitated.
"May I ask something?"
"Of course."
"Why are you still protecting him?"
Elena looked at the city outside.
"Because Mark made mistakes."
"But he is not David."
"He didn't hurt people for power."
"He just failed to stand up when he should have."
Secretary Kim understood.
The Chairman was not seeking revenge.
She was seeking accountability.
That evening, Mark arrived at Elena's office.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, he said:
"I owe you an apology."
Elena looked at him.
"An apology won't fix everything."
"I know."
He swallowed.
"But I need you to hear it."
"I was ashamed."
"Not of you."
"Of myself."
He looked down.
"When I met you, I thought I was the one saving you."
A painful smile appeared.
"I thought you needed me."
"But the truth..."
"You were the person carrying everyone."
Elena remained quiet.
"I watched my family disrespect you because I was afraid."
"Afraid that defending you would make them see me as weak."
His voice cracked.
"And I became exactly what they accused me of being."
"Weak."
Elena looked away.
May you like
Because part of her still loved him.
That was the hardest part.
