Chapter 2 - The Chairman Speaks

Silence.
Not the comfortable silence of a family gathering.
The kind of silence that arrives just before everything falls apart.
Every pair of eyes in the Roberts dining room locked onto the phone lying in front of Elena.
Secretary Kim spoke again, her calm, practiced voice carrying through the speaker.
"Chairman Vance? Are you still with me?"
Elena never looked away from David.
"I'm here."
"Excellent. The executive board is waiting for your approval on the Singapore acquisition. We also have Nova Group's quarterly partnership review scheduled in twelve minutes."
David laughed.
A forced laugh.
Too loud.
Too desperate.
"Nice trick," he scoffed. "You probably hired someone online to play secretary."
Clara crossed her arms.
"Oh please. Anyone can fake a phone call."
Brenda nodded eagerly.
"Exactly. Stop embarrassing yourself and leave."
Mark remained frozen.
His heart was pounding.
He had never heard Elena use that tone before.
Cold.
Authoritative.
Like someone who expected the entire world to obey.
Elena ignored everyone else.
"Secretary Kim."
"Yes, Chairman."
"Please confirm something for me."
"Of course."
"Who owns Nova Group?"
Secretary Kim answered without hesitation.
"Officially, Nova Group is an independent subsidiary under Horizon International Holdings."
Another pause.
"But Horizon International Holdings is wholly owned by the Vance Global Empire."
David's smile disappeared.
His fingers tightened around his wineglass.
"No..."
Secretary Kim continued.
"You personally approved the acquisition four years ago after the European expansion."
The wineglass slipped from David's hand.
Crash.
Red wine spread across the white tablecloth like blood.
"No..."
He whispered it again.
"This isn't possible."
Clara stared at her husband.
"What does she mean?"
David swallowed hard.
His breathing became uneven.
There was only one person inside Horizon International who carried the title Chairman Vance.
Employees rarely saw her.
Most executives had never even met her.
She attended board meetings through encrypted video conferences.
Her signature alone could authorize billion-dollar mergers.
People joked that seeing Chairman Vance in person was rarer than meeting royalty.
David had spent six years climbing Nova Group's corporate ladder.
He had dreamed of impressing the mysterious woman someday.
He had imagined shaking her hand after becoming Vice President.
Instead...
He had just called her a stupid housewife.
Brenda looked around in confusion.
"What are all of you talking about?"
David didn't answer.
He couldn't.
His entire career flashed before his eyes.
Every promotion.
Every bonus.
Every connection.
Gone.
Elena finally picked up her phone.
"Secretary Kim."
"Yes, Chairman."
"I'd like Human Resources to verify Mr. David Roberts' employment record."
"Immediately."
A keyboard clicked rapidly in the background.
Only seconds later—
"I have his file."
David jumped from his chair.
"Wait!"
Nobody acknowledged him.
Secretary Kim continued reading.
"Regional Sales Director. Seven years with Nova Group."
"Current salary..."
She listed the exact figure.
David's knees weakened.
Only Human Resources could know that number.
Not even Clara knew his precise compensation package.
Secretary Kim wasn't pretending.
She was reading directly from the company database.
Brenda's confidence began to crumble.
"David..."
She forced a nervous smile.
"Say something."
He couldn't.
His mouth had gone dry.
Elena spoke with the same calm expression.
"Continue."
Secretary Kim's tone became noticeably more formal.
"There is one additional item requiring your attention."
"What is it?"
"The Ethics and Compliance Department completed an internal investigation yesterday."
David's eyes widened.
No.
No, not that.
Please.
Secretary Kim continued.
"There is evidence Mr. Roberts accepted luxury gifts from two vendors during the Rogers contract negotiations."
The room exploded.
Clara stood up so quickly her chair toppled backward.
"That's ridiculous!"
David's face turned ghost white.
He knew exactly what investigation she was talking about.
He thought no one had discovered it.
He was wrong.
Secretary Kim asked quietly,
"Chairman, would you like Compliance to proceed?"
Elena looked at David.
For the first time all evening...
He wasn't arrogant.
He wasn't smug.
He looked terrified.
His voice shook.
"Elena..."
"You can't..."
"You'll ruin my life."
She answered without emotion.
"You were perfectly willing to ruin my daughter's Christmas."
Lily, still wrapped in her mother's arms, looked up through tear-filled eyes.
"Mommy..."
Elena gently brushed the little girl's hair away from her face.
Then she spoke the words that changed everything.
"Secretary Kim."
"Yes, Chairman."
"Effective immediately, suspend David Roberts pending termination procedures."
David stumbled backward.
"No!"
"Please!"
"I worked for that company for seven years!"
Elena's expression never changed.
"So did hundreds of honest employees."
"You chose greed."
"You chose arrogance."
"And tonight..."
She glanced toward the kitchen where the crushed rainbow dress was buried beneath bags of garbage.
"...you chose to laugh while my daughter cried."
Secretary Kim waited.
"Would you like me to notify the board?"
"Yes."
"And cancel Nova Group's Christmas executive celebration."
Everyone stared.
"What?"
Elena's voice remained perfectly composed.
"Redirect the entire celebration budget."
"Purchase winter coats, toys, and holiday meals."
"Donate everything to children's shelters before midnight."
Secretary Kim smiled softly.
"Consider it done, Chairman."
Even through the speakerphone, her admiration was unmistakable.
David collapsed into his chair.
His phone buzzed.
Then buzzed again.
And again.
He looked down with trembling hands.
Nova Group HR
Emergency Meeting Invitation
Another notification appeared.
Corporate Security Access Suspended.
Then another.
Company Email Disabled.
His corporate identity vanished in less than thirty seconds.
Brenda gasped.
"What... what did you do?"
Elena slowly stood, helping Lily to her feet.
She removed her own elegant cashmere coat and wrapped it gently around her daughter.
Then she faced the Roberts family.
"For five years, I allowed you to believe I was worthless."
"I tolerated every insult."
"Every sneer."
"Every holiday."
"Because I loved my husband enough to believe this family deserved another chance."
She looked at Mark.
Pain filled his eyes.
He suddenly realized he had never truly known the woman he married.
"But tonight," Elena said quietly, "you crossed the only line that matters."
"You hurt my child."
She reached for Lily's small hand.
"And from this moment forward..."
"...the Roberts family will finally learn what it costs to mistake kindness for weakness."
Behind her, every phone at the table chimed at exactly the same time.
No one noticed it yet.
But each notification carried the same shocking headline.
