Chapter 4 - The Empire Strikes Back

David's phone rang.

The caller ID read:

Nova Group - Executive HR

His hands trembled so badly he almost dropped the phone.

He answered.

"H-Hello?"

The voice was calm.

"Mr. Roberts."

"This is Human Resources."

"As of 8:17 p.m., your employment has been terminated for violations of the Corporate Ethics Code."

His breathing stopped.

"Effective immediately, all bonuses, stock options, and executive benefits have been frozen pending investigation."

Clara screamed,

"No!"

David whispered,

"My pension..."

"I'm afraid those matters will depend on the investigation's outcome."

The line disconnected.

David slowly lowered the phone.

His career was over.

Brenda rushed toward Elena.

"You've made your point."

"Enough already."

"We're family."

Elena looked at her.

"Family?"

She repeated the word quietly.

"When Lily cried..."

"You called her a beggar."

"When you crushed her Christmas dress..."

"You smiled."

"When everyone laughed at us..."

"Not one person stopped you."

She paused.

"So tell me, Brenda."

"When exactly were we family?"

Brenda had no answer.

Mark stepped between them.

"Please."

"We can fix this."

Elena's eyes softened.

"I wish we could."

"I truly do."

She reached into her purse.

Then placed a thick envelope on the dining table.

Mark frowned.

"What is this?"

"Our family trust."

"You've always wondered how we paid every medical bill."

"Every mortgage payment."

"Every emergency."

"You thought your freelance income covered it."

"It didn't."

Mark slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements.

Investment reports.

Property deeds.

Every document bore Elena's signature.

For years...

She had quietly protected his pride.

She had paid every expense without ever making him feel inadequate.

Mark's hands shook.

"You never wanted me to feel like less of a man."

She smiled sadly.

"I married you because you were kind."

"I never cared who earned more."

"But tonight..."

She looked around the room.

"You said nothing while they humiliated our daughter."

Mark closed his eyes.

The guilt crushed him.

He had frozen.

He had hoped the argument would pass.

Instead...

His silence had become betrayal.

Sophia stepped forward.

"Chairman."

"The board also requests your approval regarding Roberts Investments."

David looked up immediately.

"What about it?"

Sophia opened another folder.

"Roberts Investments receives seventy-two percent of its annual revenue through Vance Global subsidiaries."

David's heart nearly stopped.

"No..."

Sophia continued.

"Chairman Vance has elected not to renew any contracts."

Brenda gasped.

Robert Roberts, the quiet father-in-law who had remained silent most of the evening, suddenly stood.

"What did you say?"

"Our contracts expire tomorrow morning."

"And none will be renewed."

Robert staggered backward.

Their family business had depended on those contracts for nearly twenty years.

Without them...

Bankruptcy was inevitable.

Elena took Lily's hand.

"We're leaving."

No one tried to stop her.

At the doorway she turned once.

Not with hatred.

Not with triumph.

Only with quiet certainty.

"I never hid my wealth because I was ashamed."

"I hid it because I wanted to know who would love us without it."

She looked around the room one final time.

"Tonight..."

"I finally have my answer."

She walked into the snowy night with Lily by her side.

The convoy of black vehicles pulled away from the Roberts house.

Behind the frosted windows, the Roberts family remained motionless.

The Christmas lights still sparkled.

The turkey still sat untouched on the table.

The presents remained wrapped beneath the tree.

But Christmas was over.

May you like

Because in a single evening, they had lost far more than money.

They had lost the one person who had been quietly holding their entire world together.
