CHAPTER 6 — The Woman He Never Really Saw

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman He Never Really Saw
The dock was beginning to empty.
The seaplane had been reassigned.
The luggage that had once promised a dream vacation now sat in neat rows beside the terminal.
Tessa quietly picked up her suitcase.
She walked toward me instead of Caleb.
"I owe you an apology."
I waited.
"I believed everything he told me."
"What did he tell you?"
She swallowed.
"That the marriage was basically over."
"That you cared more about money than people."
"That you were cold."
She looked ashamed.
"I believed him."
I nodded slowly.
"I probably would have believed him too."
She blinked.
"What?"
"When someone repeats a lie often enough, it starts sounding like the truth."
She lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
"So am I."
She gave Caleb one final look.
"I hope you figure yourself out."
Then she walked away without looking back.
Caleb watched her leave.
His shoulders slumped.
In a single morning, he had lost the admiration of his parents, the attention of his former girlfriend, his position at my company, and the luxury vacation he'd bragged about for weeks.
Only then did he look at me—not at my clothes, not at my handbag, not at the woman who had always cleaned up the messes behind him.
For the first time, he looked at me.
"I made a mistake."
I smiled sadly.
"No."
"What?"
"You made thousands of choices."
"You chose to lie."
"You chose to let your parents insult me."
"You chose to let people believe you built my success."
"You chose to invite another woman on our anniversary."
"And today..."
I looked around the quiet dock.
"...you chose to tell me my place was in the kitchen."
He covered his face with both hands.
"I love you."
The words hung in the air.
Five years ago, hearing them would have healed every wound.
Today they sounded like an echo from a house that had already burned down.
"I think," I said gently, "you loved what my success could buy."
His eyes filled with tears.
"Lydia, please."
"I'll change."
I shook my head.
"The saddest part is..."
He waited.
"I don't need you to change anymore."
A sleek black SUV pulled up beside the dock.
My attorney stepped out and opened the rear door.
"Ms. Bennett," she said. "Everything is ready."
I nodded.
As I walked toward the vehicle, Caleb called my name one last time.
I stopped but didn't turn around.
"You once asked why I worked so hard," I said quietly.
"It was because I believed I was building a future for us."
I placed one hand on the open car door.
"Now I'll use that same strength to build a future without you."
The door closed behind me.
As the SUV pulled away from the dock, I caught one final glimpse in the side mirror.
Caleb Harrison stood exactly where I had left him.
Surrounded by expensive luggage.
With nowhere left to go.

And for the first time in his life...
He would have to pay the price for the life he had pretended was his.
