CHAPTER 3 — The Truth Comes Out

CHAPTER 3 — The Truth Comes Out

The dock fell so silent that even the waves seemed louder.

Caleb's father stared at the folder in his hands, turning each page more slowly than the last.

Bank statements.

Wire transfers.

Mortgage payments.

Invoices for luxury vacations.

Receipts for the Mercedes.

Every payment bore the same name.

Lydia Bennett.

His lips parted.

"This... this can't be right."

"It is," I replied evenly. "Every document is original. Every payment came from my personal account."

Margot snatched the folder from her husband.

She flipped through it, her confidence fading with every page.

"No," she whispered. "Caleb told us he bought the penthouse before the wedding."

"He rented it," I said. "When the lease expired, I bought it. The deed is in my name."

Graciela scoffed.

"You're lying."

Without another word, I opened my banking app and held out my phone.

The balance was more than enough to silence any argument.

Caleb reached for my wrist.

"Lydia, don't."

I pulled my hand away.

"For years, you've enjoyed telling people you were the provider. Today they deserve to know who really provided."

His father looked up.

"Did you lie about everything?"

Caleb hesitated.

"It wasn't like that."

"Then explain it."

"I... I just didn't correct people."

I let out a quiet laugh.

"You didn't correct them when your mother thanked you for buying my engagement ring."

"You didn't correct them when your friends congratulated you on 'building an empire.'"

"You didn't correct them when magazines interviewed you as a successful businessman."

"You didn't correct them when people assumed I worked for you."

His face burned red.

"I was protecting your privacy."

"My privacy?"

I shook my head.

"You erased me."

Tessa, who had been silent until now, took a cautious step backward.

"I think I should leave."

"You should," I answered.

"I honestly didn't know this trip was your anniversary."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Did you know Caleb was married?"

"Of course."

"Then you knew enough."

She lowered her gaze, unable to answer.

The seaplane pilot quietly carried luggage back toward the dock office, sensing the trip was over.

No one tried to stop him.

Graciela finally exploded.

"So what if you paid for a few things? You're his wife! That's your duty!"

I smiled sadly.

"My duty?"

"I worked eighteen-hour days while your son complained that I wasn't home enough."

"I missed birthdays because I was negotiating contracts."

"I spent Christmas answering emergency cybersecurity calls so payroll wouldn't fail."

"And after all that..."

I looked at Caleb.

"...you invited your ex to celebrate our anniversary."

No one defended him.

Not even his mother.

His father closed the folder.

"Is there anything else you've lied about?"

Caleb swallowed hard.

"No."

I sighed.

"Actually..."

May you like

Every head turned toward me.

"There is."
