CHAPTER 2 — The Cancellation

CHAPTER 2 — The Cancellation

I looked at Caleb for a long moment.

Five years.

Five birthdays he'd forgotten.

Five anniversaries I'd planned.

Five years of convincing myself that if I loved him a little harder, worked a little less, apologized a little more, he would eventually love me the way I loved him.

Standing on that dock, with his ex clinging to his arm and his mother looking at me like hired help, something inside me finally went quiet.

Not broken.

Finished.

The seaplane pilot cleared his throat politely.

"Mrs. Harrison? Whenever you're ready."

I slipped my sunglasses onto my face.

"Actually," I said calmly, "give me just one minute."

Caleb rolled his eyes.

"Please don't make this dramatic."

Tessa laughed softly.

"I told you she'd be emotional."

Graciela folded her arms.

"Career women always become impossible once they start making a little money."

I almost corrected her.

A little money?

My company had closed a seven-figure government security contract two weeks earlier.

But why bother?

People who had already decided who you were never listened to facts.

Instead, I pulled out my phone.

Caleb frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"Making a call."

"Oh, for heaven's sake," Margot muttered. "Can't she go one vacation without talking about work?"

I smiled politely.

"This call is about the vacation."

The concierge answered on the second ring.

"Good morning, Ms. Bennett. Welcome to Azure Isles Private Retreat. We are excited to receive you today."

Caleb's head turned.

His eyebrows knitted together.

Why had they called me Ms. Bennett instead of Mrs. Harrison?

Because every reservation had been made under my maiden name.

Every contract.

Every payment.

Every signature.

I never mixed personal life with business.

"Good morning, Elena," I said pleasantly.

"I need to cancel today's arrival."

Silence.

Then...

"I'm sorry... cancel?"

"Immediately."

The woman hesitated.

"There is a cancellation fee of twenty-five thousand dollars."

"I know."

"Would you like us to move your reservation instead?"

"No."

"I'll process it immediately."

"Thank you."

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Caleb blinked.

"...What?"

I slipped my phone back into my purse.

"The island has been canceled."

His laugh exploded across the dock.

"Nice joke."

"I'm not joking."

The pilot looked down at his tablet.

A notification appeared.

His expression changed instantly.

He removed his cap.

"I'm terribly sorry, everyone."

He looked directly at me.

"Mrs.—Ms. Bennett has canceled today's charter."

Then he looked toward Caleb.

"There is no longer an active reservation."

The silence that followed was almost beautiful.

Tessa frowned first.

"What do you mean, no reservation?"

The pilot remained professional.

"There is no destination for today's flight."

Margot stepped forward.

"There must be some mistake."

"There isn't."

Graciela scoffed.

"My son paid one hundred and fifty thousand dollars for this vacation."

The pilot looked confused.

"I'm afraid the reservation was paid in full by Ms. Lydia Bennett."

Nobody breathed.

Caleb's face lost every trace of color.

"What did you just say?"

The pilot checked his screen again.

"The booking owner is Lydia Bennett."

He looked uncomfortable.

"The authorization also specifies that only the booking owner may modify or transfer the reservation."

Caleb turned toward me.

"You... paid?"

I tilted my head.

"You didn't know?"

His jaw tightened.

"You told everyone..."

I looked toward his parents.

"...that you had surprised me with this anniversary trip."

Margot's mouth slowly opened.

Graciela stared at her son.

For the first time in years, neither woman had anything to say.

Tessa looked between us.

"Caleb..."

He ignored her.

"Lydia."

His voice had changed.

Gone was the smug confidence.

Gone was the arrogance.

Instead, there was panic.

"Why would you cancel?"

I met his eyes.

"Because I booked a romantic anniversary for my husband."

I glanced at Tessa.

"I didn't book a couples' retreat for your ex-girlfriend."

She immediately removed her hand from Caleb's arm.

"I... I didn't know—"

"Yes, you did."

Her face flushed crimson.

"I thought—"

"You thought I wouldn't show up."

She couldn't answer.

Caleb rubbed his forehead.

"Lydia, stop acting childish."

I actually laughed.

The sound surprised even me.

"Childish?"

"You embarrassed everyone."

"I embarrassed them?"

He spread his arms dramatically.

"We're standing here because you overreacted."

I stared at him for several seconds.

Then I asked the simplest question imaginable.

"Caleb."

"What?"

"Who do you think paid for your Rolex?"

He froze.

"...What?"

"The black Mercedes."

Silence.

"The country club membership."

Another silence.

"The penthouse renovation."

His father slowly turned toward him.

Caleb swallowed.

"Lydia..."

"The ski trip in Aspen."

"The yacht rental."

"The Italian suits."

"The watches."

"The wine collection."

"The home theater."

I counted each one on my fingers.

"Would you like me to continue?"

Margot looked genuinely confused now.

"Caleb..."

His father frowned.

"I thought your annual bonuses covered all that."

Caleb said nothing.

Nothing at all.

Because they didn't.

Not even close.

I reached into my purse again.

This time I removed a slim black folder.

Inside were copies of bank transfers.

Mortgage payments.

Credit card statements.

Luxury purchases.

Insurance policies.

Every single one linked to my personal accounts.

Not his.

Mine.

I handed the folder to his father.

"I think it's time everyone knew who has actually been paying the bills."

The older man flipped open the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His expression transformed from confusion...

...to disbelief.

Finally...

...to anger.

"Caleb."

His voice was frighteningly quiet.

"What exactly have you been telling us all these years?"

Caleb looked like a man watching the ground disappear beneath his feet.

May you like

And for the first time since I'd met him...

He had absolutely nowhere left to stand.
