CHAPTER 7 – ELEANOR'S LAST SECRET

CHAPTER 7 – ELEANOR'S LAST SECRET
Three days after the DNA announcement, the gates of Sterling Manor opened for Evelyn.
The estate stretched across hundreds of acres overlooking Lake Michigan, magnificent yet strangely quiet. Every stone carried the weight of a family history she had never known.
Nathaniel walked beside her.
"I wish your mother had come home herself."
"So do I," Evelyn replied.
Inside the mansion, portraits of the Sterling family lined the grand staircase.
Halfway up, Evelyn stopped.
One portrait stole her breath.
A young woman in a pale blue dress smiled from the canvas.
It was Eleanor.
Her mother.
The painting had been completed years before Evelyn was born, but the resemblance was unmistakable.
Nathaniel stood silently beside her.
"She was twenty-two."
Evelyn reached toward the painting but stopped just short of touching it.
"I've missed someone I never even knew I had."
Nathaniel rested a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"So have I."
Later that afternoon, Margaret Lewis entered carrying a weathered wooden box.
"We found this in a secure vault belonging to Eleanor."
Nathaniel frowned.
"I thought everything had been inventoried years ago."
"So did we."
The brass lock had rusted with age.
When it was finally opened, several journals, photographs, and sealed letters lay inside.
On top rested a single envelope addressed in Eleanor's handwriting.
For My Daughter.
Evelyn's hands trembled as she broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
My sweet Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.
I never abandoned my family.
I ran because someone inside the Sterling empire wanted me gone.
I believed leaving was the only way to keep you alive.
If Nathaniel is with you now, tell him I never blamed him.
He was deceived just as I was.
The man responsible was not my brother...
It was Richard Ashcroft.
Nathaniel's face turned white.
Richard Ashcroft.
His father's closest business partner.
The man who had managed Sterling Harbor Holdings after Eleanor disappeared.
Margaret whispered, "He's still alive."
Nathaniel's eyes hardened.
"Not for long as a free man."
The remaining journals revealed a horrifying truth.
Richard had forged documents claiming Eleanor had stolen millions from the family.
He had bribed investigators.
He had intercepted letters Eleanor tried to send home.
He had convinced Nathaniel's grieving parents that their daughter wanted nothing to do with them.
Worst of all...
Richard had secretly purchased valuable Sterling shares while the family was distracted by tragedy.
For thirty-one years he had quietly built his fortune using lies.
Nathaniel closed the final journal.
"He stole our sister..."
His voice shook with restrained fury.
"...and he stole our future."
By sunset, federal investigators were inside Sterling Manor.
Every journal was photographed.
Every letter cataloged.
Search warrants were requested before midnight.
Richard Ashcroft's empire was about to collapse.
At the same time, Grant Holloway sat alone in his nearly empty penthouse.
His phone rang.
It was Sloan.
"They arrested me."
Grant closed his eyes.
"I can't help you."
"You promised you'd protect me!"
"You slapped my pregnant wife in front of security cameras."
"You told me she'd never fight back!"
Grant remained silent.
Sloan laughed bitterly.
"You used me."
"No."
"So what was I?"
Grant looked out over Chicago.
"The biggest mistake of my life."
He ended the call.
For the first time, he admitted the truth—not to the world, but to himself.

He had destroyed his marriage long before Sloan ever entered it.
She had merely exposed the man he had already become.
