CHAPTER 6 – THE BILLIONAIRE JUDGE MAKES HIS DECISION

CHAPTER 6 – THE BILLIONAIRE JUDGE MAKES HIS DECISION

The courthouse was surrounded before sunrise.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Television trucks lined three city blocks.

No divorce hearing in Illinois history had attracted this much attention.

Inside Courtroom 14B, every seat was filled.

Grant entered looking exhausted.

His stock had fallen another eleven percent overnight.

Several banks had frozen negotiations on pending acquisitions.

Two board members had already resigned.

Sloan entered through a separate door.

Without makeup.

Without confidence.

Without the arrogance she had worn only yesterday.

She avoided every camera.

Then the side door opened.

Judge Nathaniel Sterling entered.

Beside him...

Walked Evelyn.

For the first time since her mother's death...

She was no longer wearing the pendant.

Nathaniel had insisted it remain inside a secure evidence box until its historical documentation was complete.

Court began immediately.

Nathaniel's expression was unreadable.

"I have received the expedited DNA analysis."

The room became perfectly still.

Grant's lawyer slowly lowered his pen.

Sloan stopped breathing.

Nathaniel opened the sealed envelope.

"The results establish with a probability exceeding ninety-nine point nine percent..."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"...that Mrs. Evelyn Carter is the biological daughter of Eleanor Sterling."

Gasps erupted throughout the courtroom.

Nathaniel continued.

"And therefore..."

His own voice softened.

"...my niece."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

Nathaniel looked at her—not as a judge.

Not as a billionaire.

But as an uncle seeing his family again after three decades.

"Welcome home."

The words broke something inside both of them.

Evelyn began crying openly.

Nathaniel stepped down from the bench.

Court protocol disappeared.

He stopped a respectful distance away.

"I'm sorry."

His voice shook.

"I wasn't there to protect your mother."

Evelyn whispered through tears,

"She never stopped loving whoever gave her this necklace."

Nathaniel smiled sadly.

"My father."

He gently placed the restored pendant back into her hands.

"It always belonged to you."

Grant felt as though the walls were closing around him.

Everything was over.

The woman he had tried to bankrupt...

Had become a Sterling.

The woman he had left without health insurance...

Now belonged to a family wealthier and more influential than his own.

But Nathaniel wasn't finished.

He returned to the bench.

"Because of my newly confirmed familial relationship with Mrs. Carter..."

He paused.

"...I am legally required to recuse myself from any further proceedings in this divorce."

Grant felt a flicker of hope.

Maybe another judge would—

Nathaniel raised another document.

"However..."

That single word erased Grant's optimism.

"Before transferring this matter, this court retains authority to enforce emergency protective orders already under consideration."

Grant swallowed hard.

Nathaniel signed the order.

"Mr. Grant Holloway is prohibited from transferring, hiding, or liquidating disputed marital assets."

Another signature.

"Mrs. Carter is granted temporary exclusive access to the marital residence or equivalent housing at Mr. Holloway's expense."

A third signature.

"Mrs. Carter shall receive immediate financial support, comprehensive prenatal medical care, personal security, and unrestricted access to all records requested by forensic accountants."

Grant's attorney quietly leaned toward him.

"We're finished."

Grant stared ahead.

"No."

"We lost."

"No..."

Grant whispered.

"I lost her."

Across the courtroom, Evelyn looked at the man she had once believed she would spend forever with.

She felt... nothing.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Only peace.

The fear was gone.

She was no longer standing alone against wealth and power.

She had discovered the truth about her mother.

Found the family she never knew existed.

And, for the first time since this nightmare began...

She believed her child would be born into a future built on love instead of fear.

But neither she nor Grant knew that another secret was already racing toward Chicago—

One hidden inside Eleanor Sterling's forgotten journals.

A secret capable of exposing the real reason Eleanor disappeared thirty-one years earlier...

And the powerful man who had spent decades making sure she never came home.
