CHAPTER 4 – THE DNA ORDER

CHAPTER 4 – THE DNA ORDER

The courtroom erupted.

Reporters rushed toward the doors.

Court officers shouted for order.

Grant felt his carefully constructed divorce case collapsing before his eyes.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

Evelyn was supposed to leave with a modest settlement, disappear quietly, and allow him to marry Sloan before the next shareholders' meeting.

Instead...

His wife had just been connected to one of the wealthiest families in America.

"No," Grant whispered.

"No... no..."

His attorney leaned toward him.

"If the judge is correct..."

Grant looked up.

"...then your wife isn't financially dependent anymore."

Grant answered through clenched teeth.

"You don't understand."

"I think I do."

"No."

Grant's voice dropped lower.

"If she's really a Sterling..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

His lawyer did it for him.

"...then every decision you've made over the last year is going to be examined by people far more powerful than you."

Grant's silence confirmed it.

Nathaniel addressed the courtroom once more.

"Before this hearing proceeds, I am issuing three immediate orders."

Everyone listened carefully.

"First..."

He looked directly at Sloan.

"The Sheriff's Office is instructed to file assault charges based on the security recordings and witness testimony."

Sloan's face drained of color.

"You can't!"

"I already have."

Two deputy sheriffs quietly stepped forward.

One remained beside her chair.

Not handcuffs.

Not yet.

But close enough to remind her that freedom had conditions.

Nathaniel continued.

"Second."

He turned toward Grant.

"Effective immediately, all known marital assets are frozen pending forensic accounting."

Grant jumped to his feet.

"My companies—"

"Are separate."

"My accounts—"

"Will remain untouched if they are truly separate."

Grant knew exactly what that meant.

Many weren't.

Millions had moved between corporate and personal accounts.

If investigators followed the money...

Everything would surface.

Nathaniel raised one final document.

"And third..."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"This court orders immediate reinstatement of comprehensive medical coverage for Mrs. Carter and her unborn child at Mr. Holloway's expense until final judgment."

Grant's attorney quietly closed his notebook.

"We're not contesting that order."

Grant stared at him.

"What are you doing?"

"Saving what's left of your case."

The hearing continued for another hour.

Witness after witness described Grant's behavior.

His accountant admitted under oath that Evelyn's spending limit had been reduced to fifty dollars a week.

His former driver testified that Sloan had been living in Grant's penthouse nearly a year before the separation.

His executive assistant reluctantly confirmed that Evelyn's phone calls had been blocked on Grant's personal instructions.

Each statement chipped away at the billionaire's carefully crafted public image.

By noon...

There was almost nothing left.

Outside the courthouse, television crews broadcast live.

"Holloway divorce takes shocking turn..."

"Judge suggests wife may belong to Sterling dynasty..."

"Corporate scandal deepens..."

Social media exploded.

#JusticeForEvelyn became the number one trending topic in Illinois before lunch.

Shares of Holloway Foods began falling.

Board members flooded Grant's phone with frantic messages.

One text stood out.

Emergency board meeting. Attendance mandatory.

Another followed seconds later.

What didn't you tell us?

Grant turned the phone face down.

For the first time in years...

He felt genuinely afraid.

Inside the judge's private chambers, Evelyn finally accepted Nathaniel's invitation.

The room was warm.

Books covered every wall.

Family photographs sat neatly arranged across a polished wooden desk.

Nathaniel picked up one silver frame.

Without saying a word...

He handed it to her.

Evelyn's breath caught.

The young woman smiling from the picture looked astonishingly familiar.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same gentle expression.

Only older.

"My mother..."

Nathaniel nodded slowly.

"My sister."

Evelyn looked back at the photograph.

Then at the judge.

Then back again.

Her hands began to shake.

"No..."

Nathaniel's own voice cracked.

"I've searched for her for thirty-one years."

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

"My mother told me she had no family."

Nathaniel whispered,

"She was wrong."

The room fell silent.

Then he reached into his desk drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

Inside was a DNA authorization form.

"I don't want to pressure you."

He placed it gently on the desk.

"But one test..."

He looked at Evelyn with hope and heartbreak in equal measure.

"...could answer every question both of us have been asking our entire lives."

Evelyn stared at the form.

Outside the courthouse, reporters fought for headlines.
