🔥 CHAPTER 2 : THE BABY IN THE WRECKAGE

CHAPTER 2: THE BABY IN THE WRECKAGE

The emergency team burst through the hospital doors.

Rain hammered the pavement.

Lightning flashed across the dark sky.

Thirty yards from the entrance, a mangled sedan sat twisted against a concrete barrier.

The front end was crushed.

Glass covered the roadway.

Steam hissed from beneath the crumpled hood.

One paramedic stopped cold.

"My God."

The impact had been devastating.

No one looking at that vehicle would believe a baby could survive inside.

Yet somewhere within the wreckage...

Oliver was still there.

Back inside the waiting room, Megan sat trembling.

Blood continued dripping from her ankle.

Her soaked clothes clung to her skin.

But she wasn't thinking about herself.

Only Oliver.

Every passing second felt unbearable.

"What if he's scared?"

She whispered it over and over.

"What if he's crying?"

Charles Harrington stood quietly nearby.

Watching.

Listening.

Something about the young woman felt familiar.

Not her face.

Not her voice.

Something deeper.

A memory he couldn't quite reach.

Outside, firefighters worked furiously.

The driver's door was completely crushed.

The passenger side wasn't much better.

"Over here!"

One of the rescuers pointed through a shattered window.

A tiny hand.

Movement.

The baby was alive.

The entire team accelerated.

Tools roared.

Metal screamed.

Rain poured down.

Then finally—

A cry.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

A baby's cry.

The sound brought instant relief.

"He's alive!"

someone shouted.

For a moment, every responder smiled.

But the celebration didn't last.

Because as they pulled away part of the wreckage, they discovered something strange.

Oliver's car seat hadn't moved.

Not even an inch.

The seatbelt system had somehow remained perfectly locked despite the force of impact.

One firefighter shook his head.

"That's impossible."

Another responder pointed toward the rear window.

"No."

His voice was tense.

"Look at that."

Everyone turned.

The back windshield had been shattered from the outside.

Not from the crash.

From the outside.

The realization spread quickly.

Someone had struck the vehicle.

Before the collision.

Or immediately after.

Either possibility was disturbing.

A police officer stepped closer.

"Document everything."

His instincts were screaming.

Something wasn't right.

This wasn't looking like an ordinary accident anymore.

Five minutes later, Oliver was carried into the hospital wrapped inside a firefighter's jacket.

The moment Megan saw him, she broke down.

"My baby."

Her voice shattered.

"My baby."

She reached for him.

The nurses who had doubted her earlier stood silent.

Unable to meet her eyes.

Oliver immediately stopped crying when he heard her voice.

The room seemed to exhale.

Doctors quickly examined him.

Minor bruising.

Mild dehydration.

Shock.

But alive.

Completely alive.

A miracle.

Megan buried her face against his tiny head and sobbed.

For the first time since entering the hospital, she allowed herself to believe he would survive.

Across the room, Charles Harrington watched quietly.

Then Oliver opened his eyes.

For just a second.

The old man's breath caught.

The baby's eyes.

Bright blue.

Exactly like someone he once knew.

Someone he had lost.

Someone he hadn't thought about in years.

A memory surfaced.

A rainy night.

A frightened young woman.

A promise.

Charles suddenly looked at Megan.

Really looked at her.

And his heart nearly stopped.

"Impossible."

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Megan glanced up.

"What?"

Charles stared.

The shape of her face.

The small scar near her eyebrow.

The necklace around her neck.

A silver pendant.

His expression changed completely.

"Where did you get that necklace?"

Megan frowned.

"What?"

"The necklace."

She instinctively touched it.

"I've had it my whole life."

Charles looked shaken.

"Who gave it to you?"

"My mother."

The old man sat down slowly.

Because twenty-six years earlier...

He had given an identical necklace to someone else.

Someone who vanished without explanation.

Meanwhile, outside, police continued processing the crash scene.

The rain had eased.

Flashing lights illuminated the wreckage.

An officer opened the damaged trunk.

Then froze.

"Detective."

His voice sounded strange.

The detective walked over.

"What is it?"

The officer simply pointed.

Inside the trunk sat a large waterproof storage container.

Locked.

Undamaged.

The detective frowned.

"Open it."

A crowbar snapped the lock.

The lid lifted.

And every person standing nearby went silent.

Inside wasn't luggage.

Or emergency supplies.

Or personal belongings.

It was filled with documents.

Hundreds of pages.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Newspaper clippings.

Medical files.

Every folder carried the same name.

CHARLES HARRINGTON.

The detective stared.

"What the hell..."

The hospital owner.

The billionaire.

The man who had just saved Megan's child.

Someone had been secretly collecting information about him.

For years.

Then the detective found the final item.

A sealed envelope.

Written in red ink.

Only four words appeared on the front:

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME

The detective carefully opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first sentence made his blood run cold.

If you're reading this, they finally found us.

Back inside the hospital, Megan rocked Oliver gently.

Unaware that police had just discovered a secret connected to her crash.

Unaware that Charles Harrington was staring at her like he'd seen a ghost.

Unaware that the accident may not have been an accident at all.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Almost.

But something told her to answer.

Slowly, she pressed the button.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice whispered:

"They know the baby survived."

Megan's entire body froze.

The voice continued.

"Get out of the hospital."

A pause.

Then four terrifying words:

May you like

"They're coming for Oliver."
