CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN WHO RAN THROUGH THE STORM

The automatic hospital doors flew open with a loud bang.
Every head in the waiting room turned.
A young woman stumbled inside.
Barefoot.
Bleeding.
Soaked from head to toe.
Broken glass was embedded in her ankle, leaving tiny red footprints across the polished floor.
In one hand, she clutched a blue baby blanket.
In the other, she held the doorframe to keep herself from collapsing.
"Please..."
Her voice cracked.
"Please help me."
The receptionist looked up from her computer.
"What happened?"
The woman gasped for air.
"My baby."
The words barely escaped her lips.
"My baby is hurt."
Immediately several people in the waiting room looked over.
A mother pulled her child closer.
An elderly couple exchanged worried glances.
The nurse behind the desk stood.
"Where is your baby?"
The woman pointed toward the parking lot.
"In the car."
Silence.
The nurse frowned.
"In the car?"
"The accident happened two minutes ago."
Tears streamed down the woman's face.
"The door is jammed."
She could barely breathe.
"I ran here for help."
The nurse's expression hardened.
"You left your baby alone in a crashed vehicle?"
The woman stared in disbelief.
"No."
"That's what you just said."
"I came to get help!"
The nurse folded her arms.
The room suddenly felt colder.
"Ma'am, we need to verify your story."
The woman looked as if she'd been slapped.
"My story?"
A few people started recording with their phones.
Others whispered.
The woman glanced around desperately.
Nobody moved.
Nobody helped.
Everyone watched.
Like spectators.
Not people.
"Please."
She held up the blanket.
"His name is Oliver."
The blanket shook in her trembling hands.
"He's only six months old."
The nurse pointed toward a chair.
"Sit down while security verifies the situation."
The woman couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Every second felt like an eternity.
She imagined Oliver trapped inside the vehicle.
Alone.
Crying.
Scared.
Maybe injured.
Maybe worse.
"There isn't time!"
she screamed.
The entire waiting room jumped.
"There isn't time!"
And then...
A calm voice came from the corner.
"Nurse."
Everyone turned.
An elderly man lowered his newspaper.
Gray hair.
Simple clothes.
A worn wooden cane resting beside him.
Nothing about him looked important.
Nothing except his eyes.
They were watching everything.
The nurse sighed.
"Sir, please stay out of this."
The old man slowly folded the newspaper.
Then he stood.
And suddenly...
The atmosphere changed.
Two physicians walking through the hallway immediately stopped.
A security guard straightened.
A doctor whispered something under his breath.
The old man pointed toward the doors.
"Send an emergency team outside."
The nurse frowned.
"Sir—"
Now his voice became firm.
Not loud.
Just powerful.
"Immediately."
The nurse blinked.
Confused.
Then one of the doctors stepped forward.
"Mr. Harrington?"
The waiting room froze.
The old man nodded.
And suddenly everyone recognized the name.
Charles Harrington.
Founder of the largest hospital network in the state.
The billionaire who owned more than twenty hospitals.
The man whose portrait hung in the lobby.
The nurse turned pale.
The old man looked directly at her.
"You asked for verification."
Then he pointed toward the parking lot.
"Go get it."
Within seconds chaos erupted.
Doctors ran.
Security officers sprinted outside.
Paramedics grabbed equipment.
The entire hospital shifted into emergency mode.
And Megan collapsed into a chair.
May you like
Praying they weren't already too late.
