CHAPTER 6 — EMILY'S SECRET

CHAPTER 6 — EMILY'S SECRET

Rebecca moved into a nearby apartment the following weekend.

Not because Michael forced her.

Because Emily needed space to heal.

Michael promised she could visit.

But only if Emily wanted her to.

Rebecca agreed.

Without arguing.

It was the first boundary she had accepted in years.

Weeks passed.

Emily gained weight.

Color returned to her cheeks.

The laughter came back slowly.

The house no longer felt haunted.

Mrs. Hayes baked again.

Michael smiled more.

Even the garden Sarah loved began blooming after months of neglect.

Life wasn't normal.

But it was moving.

Forward.

One rainy afternoon Megan was helping Emily clean her room.

While organizing stuffed animals, Emily pulled a tiny pink backpack from the back of her closet.

"I forgot."

"What is it?" Megan asked.

"My secret bag."

Emily unzipped it.

Inside were crayons...

A tiny stuffed rabbit...

Sarah's favorite silk scarf...

And dozens of folded napkins.

Every napkin held small pieces of dried bread.

Hard as stone.

Megan looked at them quietly.

"Sweetheart..."

"Why did you keep these?"

Emily answered as though it were obvious.

"So Mommy wouldn't be hungry."

Megan felt tears fill her eyes.

Emily continued.

"Every time Grandma threw my food away..."

"I hid some."

"So Mommy could eat in Heaven."

The room became unbearably still.

Michael, standing outside the half-open bedroom door, heard every word.

He leaned against the wall to keep from falling.

For months...

His little girl had secretly saved pieces of bread.

Believing she was feeding her mother.

That evening Michael called Dr. Lewis.

The psychologist listened silently before speaking.

"This is actually common in young children after sudden loss."

"They create invisible responsibilities."

"They believe someone they love still depends on them."

Michael closed his eyes.

"So how do we help her let go?"

Dr. Lewis answered softly.

"You don't tell her she's wrong."

"You give her a new way to love her mother."

The following Sunday, Michael took Emily and Megan to Sarah's favorite lakeside park.

Mrs. Hayes came too.

Even Rebecca was invited.

She almost declined.

But Emily surprised everyone.

"Grandma..."

"Come."

Rebecca cried before answering.

"I'd love to."

Together they carried a small wooden birdhouse Michael had built himself.

Emily painted purple butterflies across the roof.

Inside, she carefully placed every dried piece of bread from the pink backpack.

Not as food.

As a goodbye.

She closed the tiny door.

"I think Mommy knows now."

Michael knelt beside her.

"What does she know?"

Emily smiled through tears.

"That I'll keep eating."

A warm breeze passed through the trees.

The birdhouse swayed gently.

Rebecca quietly whispered,

"I'm sorry, Sarah."

No one answered.

No one needed to.

But as the family stood together by the lake, Megan noticed something unexpected.

Tucked beneath the birdhouse was a weathered metal tin that clearly hadn't been there before.

Michael pulled it free from the soil.

Inside was an old key...

And a folded property deed bearing Sarah's maiden name.

None of them had ever heard Sarah mention owning land.

Attached to the deed was one final handwritten note:

"Some truths should wait until Emily is ready."

Michael and Megan exchanged a stunned glance.

Whatever Sarah had left behind...

Their journey was far from over.
