CHAPTER 5 — SARAH'S LAST MESSAGE

CHAPTER 5 — SARAH'S LAST MESSAGE

Michael stared at the handwriting until the letters blurred.

It was unmistakably Sarah's.

The same looping "M" she used in birthday cards.

The same tiny heart she always dotted beneath her signature instead of writing "Love."

His hands trembled as he turned the photograph over.

Written across the back was a single sentence.

"If anything happens to me, don't let Rebecca make decisions for Emily."

The hallway fell silent.

Mrs. Hayes gasped.

Rebecca's face drained of color.

"No..."

She whispered.

"I've never seen that."

Michael looked at her.

"Then explain why Sarah would write this."

Rebecca slowly backed away.

"She was upset with me."

"About what?"

No answer.

Only tears.

The next morning Michael drove straight to the state police office.

The officer handling Sarah's accident file agreed to reopen the evidence surrounding her final hours.

"There wasn't enough at the time to suggest foul play," the detective explained.

"But this photograph raises questions."

Especially because the original crash investigation had never mentioned Sarah stopping at a roadside diner.

Someone had removed that detail from the timeline.

Michael's stomach tightened.

Who?

And why?

Back home, Emily was coloring at the dining table.

For the first time in months, she laughed.

Megan sat beside her, quietly helping her draw butterflies.

Then Emily picked up a purple crayon.

"My mommy liked purple."

Megan smiled.

"She did."

Emily nodded.

"And Grandma didn't."

Rebecca froze.

"What did you say?"

Emily looked confused.

"Mommy said Grandma always wanted everything perfect."

Mrs. Hayes slowly lowered the bowl she was carrying.

She remembered.

Years earlier...

Sarah and Rebecca had argued constantly.

About parenting.

About control.

About appearances.

Sarah believed children should be heard.

Rebecca believed children should obey.

The arguments had never truly ended.

They had only gone silent after Sarah married Michael.

That evening Michael searched through Sarah's old storage boxes.

Wedding albums.

Christmas cards.

Medical records.

Nothing.

Until he found a small wooden keepsake box hidden beneath a stack of blankets.

Inside lay dozens of handwritten letters.

Every one addressed to Emily.

Letters for future birthdays.

Graduations.

Her first heartbreak.

Her wedding day.

Sarah had written them while pregnant.

Planning for milestones decades away.

Michael broke down.

But something else caught his attention.

The final envelope was different.

It wasn't addressed to Emily.

It simply read:

For Michael—Only If I'm Gone.

His pulse quickened.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Michael,

If you're reading this, something happened that I never expected.

I need you to promise me one thing.

Protect Emily from anyone who mistakes control for love.

Even if that person is my own mother.

She loves deeply...
But when she's afraid, she controls everything around her.
She doesn't even realize she's doing it.

Promise me Emily will grow up knowing kindness before obedience.

Promise me she will never believe my love depends on being perfect.

And promise me...
You'll forgive Rebecca one day.

She broke me in small ways.
But grief will break her too.

Don't let Emily inherit either of our pain.

Love always,
Sarah

Michael couldn't breathe.

Sarah had seen this coming.

Not the accident.

Rebecca.

That same night, Rebecca quietly packed a suitcase.

Mrs. Hayes found her folding sweaters.

"Leaving?"

Rebecca nodded without looking up.

"I've done enough damage."

Mrs. Hayes closed the suitcase.

"No."

"You finally admitted it."

"That's where healing starts."

Rebecca looked exhausted.

"I wanted to save my granddaughter."

Mrs. Hayes answered gently,

"No."

"You wanted to save yourself from losing another daughter."

Rebecca burst into tears.

For the first time...

May you like

She cried for Sarah.

Not for herself.
