CHAPTER 4 — THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 4 — THE RECORDING

Michael barely slept.

Dr. Lewis's question echoed through his mind.

Who else has access?

By sunrise, he had made a decision.

He would not accuse anyone.

Not yet.

He needed proof.

The following morning, Michael quietly called the home's security company.

Within an hour, a technician arrived through the back entrance.

Small cameras were installed in the office hallway and near the filing cabinet.

Only Michael knew they existed.

Not even Mrs. Hayes.

Certainly not Rebecca.

Meanwhile, Emily continued eating.

Small portions.

Toast.

Soup.

Apple slices.

Every meal was still difficult.

But she no longer cried before sitting at the table.

Megan never asked for one more bite.

She simply sat nearby, telling gentle stories about birds, rainstorms, and Sarah's favorite flower garden that Mrs. Hayes had described.

Emily smiled more each day.

Rebecca hated every smile.

Three nights later...

Michael's phone vibrated at 1:18 a.m.

Motion detected — Office Camera.

His heart pounded.

He opened the live feed.

Rebecca.

She was standing in his office wearing a robe.

She carefully unlocked the filing cabinet.

Again.

Michael rushed downstairs.

By the time he reached the hallway, Rebecca was already leaving the office with several papers tucked beneath her sweater.

"Rebecca."

She stopped instantly.

Slowly turned around.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally Michael said,

"What are you holding?"

"Nothing."

"Show me."

"It's personal."

"It belongs to my daughter."

Michael's voice became dangerously calm.

"No."

"It belongs to Emily."

Rebecca's hands trembled.

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

For a long moment, she simply stared at him.

Then she pulled the folded papers from beneath her sweater.

Behavioral reports.

Therapy recommendations.

Psychological evaluations.

Every page warning against control and coercion.

Michael looked at her in disbelief.

"You've been hiding these?"

"They're poisoning you against me!"

"They're protecting Emily."

"They're turning my granddaughter into a weak child!"

Michael felt anger rise for the first time since Sarah died.

"Weak?"

"She watched her mother disappear forever."

"She's four."

Rebecca burst into tears.

"You think I'm cruel?"

"I lost my daughter!"

"I couldn't save Sarah!"

"So I refused to lose Emily too!"

Her voice echoed through the hallway.

Mrs. Hayes and Megan appeared at the top of the stairs.

Rebecca collapsed into a chair.

"I kept telling myself..."

"If I controlled everything..."

"...then nothing else could be taken from me."

The confession hung in the air.

Pain.

Fear.

Love twisted into something harmful.

Michael knelt in front of her.

"I know you loved Sarah."

"I know you love Emily."

"But love without listening nearly destroyed her."

Rebecca covered her face.

For the first time since moving into the house...

She had no defense left.

Just grief.

Just regret.

Just silence.

But before anyone could decide what came next...

The front doorbell rang.

Three sharp chimes.

At 1:32 in the morning.

Michael opened the front door.

A uniformed courier stood outside holding a sealed envelope.

"Delivery for Mr. Michael Carter."

"No sender listed."

Michael signed.

Closed the door.

Opened the envelope.

Inside was only one photograph.

It showed Sarah.

Alive.

Taken just hours before the fatal accident.

She was standing in a roadside diner...

Talking to someone whose face had been deliberately cut out of the picture.

Scrawled across the bottom in black ink were seven chilling words:

"Sarah was trying to tell you something."

Michael's hands began to shake.

May you like

Because on the back of the photograph...

He recognized Sarah's handwriting.
