Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

The Connecticut winter arrived with a soft, quiet snowfall that painted the grand stone manor in brilliant shades of white. But inside the Ricci estate, the air was warm, filled with the rich aroma of roasting cedarwood, hot chocolate, and the joyous chaos of a family preparing for their first real holiday together.

The front parlor had been completely restored. The silk wallpaper that Nico had once defaced with a marker was gone, replaced by beautiful, warm oak paneling covered in framed drawings made by all four children.

A massive, sixteen-foot Christmas tree stood in the center of the grand foyer, decorated with a chaotic mix of expensive crystal ornaments and hilarious, handmade paper snowflakes created by Rosie and the triplets.

Clare stood at the top of the grand staircase, looking down at the beautiful scene. She was wearing a stunning emerald-green dress that Dante had bought for her—a dress that made her look radiant, confident, and entirely complete.

Dante walked up behind her, his arms sliding around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of vanilla and lavender that always followed her.

"The kids are waiting," Dante whispered, his deep voice vibrating against her spine. "Leo already tried to open three presents early, and Asher told him that if he touched another box, Rosie would deploy her tactical defense system."

Clare laughed, turning in his arms to look up into his striking gray eyes. The stormy darkness that had once defined him was completely gone, replaced by a deep, radiant warmth that belonged entirely to her.

"Let them open one," Clare smiled, resting her hands on his chest. "They've had a long year, Don Ricci."

Dante reached into his pocket, his expression suddenly becoming serious, almost nervous—a rare sight for the man who used to rule the city with an iron fist. He pulled out a small, velvet box and opened it to reveal a magnificent, vintage platinum ring set with a flawless, radiant-cut emerald surrounded by delicate diamonds.

"I don't want to be your boss anymore, Clare," Dante said, his voice dropping into a low, passionate register that made her heart skip a beat. "I want to be your husband. I want to build a life where you never have to count the quarters in your purse, and where these four kids always know they have a mother who is entirely fearless. Will you marry me, Clare?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled Clare’s eyes. She didn't look at the expensive ring; she looked at the man who had looked at her scars and seen his own salvation.

"Yes, Dante," Clare whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "A thousand times, yes."

From the bottom of the grand staircase, a sudden explosion of cheers erupted.

Clare and Dante looked down to see all four children standing in a row, throwing a handful of white paper snowflakes into the air like confetti. Leo was holding a plastic lightsaber, Asher was grinning from ear to ear, Nico was clicking a stopwatch, and Rosie was jumping up and down with Barnaby the rabbit tucked under her arm.

"She said yes!" Leo shouted, high-fiving his brother. "The fortress is officially ours!"

Dante laughed, picking Clare up by her waist and spinning her around on the landing before leading her down the stairs toward the beautiful, chaotic kingdom they had built together.

The iron gates of the Ricci estate remained high, but they were no longer designed to keep out a war. They were simply there to protect the most beautiful, resilient, and unbreakable family in the entire world.

THE END.
