Chapter 8 - The Breach at Midnight

"Dante!" Clare screamed, throwing open the heavy mahogany doors of his third-floor study without knocking.
Dante was sitting behind his desk, surrounded by maps of the city and tactical radios. Marco and three captains were huddled over a blueprint. They all snapped their weapons up instantly, relaxing only when they saw it was Clare.
"Clare? What the hell are you doing up here?" Dante asked, slamming his hands on the desk as he stood up.
"Thomas is a traitor," Clare gasped, throwing the burner phone onto his desk. "He just gave the Marconis the security override codes for the west wing. The grid goes down at midnight. They’re coming through the side terrace in exactly five minutes!"
Dante’s face transformed into something monstrous. He didn't waste time questioning her. He grabbed his tactical radio.
"All units, this is Don Ricci," he roared into the mic. "Internal breach. West wing terrace. Ambush protocol. Execute now!"
He looked at Clare, his eyes burning with a mixture of terror for his family and intense admiration for the woman standing before him. He pulled a small, silver-plated revolver from his desk drawer and pressed it into her hands.
"Go to the boys and Rosie. Lock yourselves in the vault. If anyone besides me tries to open that door, you use this. Can you do that, Clare?"
"I can," Clare said, her fingers tightening around the cold steel of the weapon.
As she sprinted back toward the west wing, the mansion’s alarms began to wail—a deep, rhythmic red strobe light illuminating the long corridors. Clare burst into the boys' bedroom just as Rosie and the triplets were waking up, terrified by the sirens.
"Mommy!" Rosie cried, running into her arms.
"Pack up, team," Clare said, her voice remaining incredibly calm and controlled despite the chaos. "We're going to the big fort. Right now. Hold hands. Don't let go."
She led the four children into the hidden panic room behind the master wardrobe. Just as she slammed the heavy, six-inch steel door shut and turned the locking wheel, the sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the hallway outside.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT.
Rosie screamed, burying her face in Clare's lap. The triplets huddled together, Asher shaking violently. But Leo looked at Clare, seeing the silver revolver in her hand and the absolute, unbroken resolve in her eyes.
"Are we going to win, Ms. Clare?" Leo whispered, his little voice trembling.

Clare reached out, pulling all four children into a tight, fierce embrace. She listened to the thudding of boots, the shattering of glass, and the distant, roaring voice of Dante Ricci defending his home.
"Yes, Leo," Clare whispered, kissing the top of his head. "We are going to win. Because your dad is out there, and nobody survives a fight with a family like ours."
