Chapter 6 - A Crack in the Armor

When they returned to the estate that evening, Dante was waiting for them in the grand foyer. He was leaning against the marble balustrade, his hands tucked into his pockets, his suit jacket off. He had clearly heard about the meeting from the security detail that had followed Clare to the school.
"The headmaster called me," Dante said as the boys ran off to find Rosie in the garden. "He sounded like he was about to cry. He asked me if my new nanny was a former federal prosecutor."
Clare smiled, setting her purse on the console table. "I just told him the truth. People like him are bullies, Mr. Ricci. They fold the second someone pushes back with actual stakes."
Dante walked down the steps, stopping just a foot away from her. The cold, impenetrable wall he usually kept between himself and the world was visibly cracking.
"Thank you," Dante said softly. "Nobody has ever defended my boys like that. Usually, people just apologize for them or try to hide them away."
"They're good boys, Dante," Clare said, using his first name for the first time. The intimacy of it hung in the warm air between them. "They just need to know they matter more than your business."
Dante looked at her, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to her eyes. The tension between them was no longer about employer and employee; it was the magnetic, dangerous pull of two lonely people who recognized the scars on each other's souls.
Before the moment could deepen, the heavy front doors banged open.
Marco, Dante’s primary security chief—a massive man with a broken nose and a permanent scowl—rushed into the foyer, his face pale and sweating.
"Boss," Marco said, his voice urgent. "We have a problem. The New Haven warehouse was just hit. It wasn't a robbery. It was a statement. The Marconis left a message on the wall. They know about the nanny. They know about the girl."
Clare felt her blood turn to absolute ice. Her mind went instantly to Rosie, who was currently outside in the garden with the triplets.
Dante’s entire demeanor transformed in a split second. The vulnerable father vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless, terrifying King of the Connecticut Underworld. His eyes turned to flint, his jaw lock-jawed with a terrifying fury.
"Lock it down," Dante ordered, his voice vibrating with a lethal energy that made the glass chandeliers above them rattle. "Marco, bring every available soldier to the perimeter. Nobody enters this property. Nobody leaves. If a single Marconi looks at my gates, kill them where they stand."

He turned to Clare, his hands slamming down onto her shoulders. His grip was tight, desperate, and fiercely protective.
"Clare, listen to me," Dante growled, staring directly into her panicked eyes. "You and Rosie stay in the west wing panic room. Do not open the door for anyone but me or Marco. Do you understand? I will burn this entire city to ash before I let them touch you."
