CHAPTER 6: THE SECRET DANIEL HAD CARRIED ALONE

CHAPTER 6: THE SECRET DANIEL HAD CARRIED ALONE
As detectives escorted Vanessa into the foyer, Grant stood motionless beside the fireplace.
His world had collapsed in less than an hour.
His wife was under arrest.
His inheritance was gone.
His father's trust had disowned him.
And now every relative in the room looked at him with quiet disappointment.
He turned toward Daniel.
"You knew."
Daniel nodded.
"For weeks."
Grant laughed bitterly.
"You let me destroy myself."
"No."
Daniel's answer came without hesitation.
"I gave you every opportunity to stop."
Grant remembered.
The phone calls Daniel never returned.
The meetings postponed.
The repeated invitations to "talk privately."
He hadn't accepted a single one.
Because he believed he had already won.
Emma watched Daniel carefully.
Something still felt unfinished.
He had prepared for everything.
Too carefully.
Too completely.
As if he had expected betrayal long before Lily was born.
She touched his arm.
"Daniel..."
He looked at her.
"When did this really begin?"
He was silent for several seconds.
Then he reached into his coat one last time.
Unlike the other documents...
This one was old.
The paper had yellowed at the edges.
Emma recognized Richard Bennett's handwriting immediately.
"It was written six months before Father died."
Daniel handed it to her.
She unfolded the letter.
The first line stole her breath.
Daniel, if you're reading this, I failed to keep our family together.
Her eyes filled with tears.
He continued quietly.
"Father hired investigators before he became ill."
Emma looked up.
"He suspected Grant?"
Daniel nodded.
"He discovered money disappearing from the foundation."
"But he never found out who was helping him."
Emma slowly looked toward the front door, where Vanessa had just been taken away in handcuffs.
Daniel continued.
"Father asked me to protect whoever inherited the estate."
Emma whispered,
"He knew about Lily?"
"He knew you were pregnant."
"He believed the baby would become a target."
Emma's heart pounded.
Richard had seen the danger before anyone else.
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I promised him I'd keep you both safe."
She stared at him.
"So... the trip to Europe..."
"...was bait."
"The cameras..."
"...were Father's idea."
"The DNA test..."
"...his attorneys arranged it before Lily was born."
Emma suddenly understood.
Nothing Daniel had done was about proving she was faithful.
He had never doubted her.
Not for a single second.
Everything had been designed to expose whoever threatened their daughter.
Tears rolled down Emma's cheeks.
"You trusted me all along?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"I married you because I trusted you."
He gently wiped the dried blood from her chin with his thumb.
"I just couldn't tell you the plan."
Emma leaned into him, exhausted.
"I hated you for five minutes tonight."
He managed a faint smile.
"I know."
"I'm sorry."
"You don't owe me an apology."
He kissed her forehead softly.
"You survived."
Before either of them could say another word, Detective Collins returned from the foyer.
"Mr. Bennett..."
Daniel turned.
"We've received a call from the financial crimes unit."
"What happened?"
The detective's expression grew grave.
"We traced the missing two million dollars."
Grant looked up hopefully.
"Where is it?"
Detective Collins answered slowly.
"It was never sent overseas."
Everyone frowned.
"Then where did it go?"
She looked directly at Daniel.
"It was used to make the down payment on a private medical facility."
Emma blinked.
"A hospital?"
Detective Collins nodded.
"Registered under a shell company."
Daniel's expression changed for the first time that night.
Not anger.
Not relief.
Recognition.
He whispered a single name.
"...Evelyn."
Emma stared at him.
"Who's Evelyn?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"The woman who raised Vanessa."
The detective added quietly,
"She's also the person listed as the sole owner of the shell company."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Vanessa hadn't been the mastermind after all.
She had been following someone else's plan.
