CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO PLANNED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO PLANNED EVERYTHING

Vanessa's scream echoed through the mansion.

"She's lying! All of this is a setup!"

Detective Sarah Collins didn't even glance up from her notes.

"Mrs. Bennett, anything further you say may be used as evidence."

Vanessa's breathing grew ragged.

She pointed at Emma with trembling fingers.

"This was her plan from the beginning! She trapped Daniel with that pregnancy!"

Emma looked at her calmly.

"I was already married to Daniel."

Vanessa had no answer.

Instead, she turned desperately toward Margaret.

"Say something!"

Margaret's lips trembled.

For the first time in years, she realized she no longer controlled the room.

Daniel did.

And Daniel wasn't protecting the Bennett name.

He was protecting the truth.

The detectives continued sorting through the financial records.

One officer suddenly looked up.

"Detective."

Sarah walked over.

"What did you find?"

The officer held up a folder hidden beneath the investment documents.

"It wasn't listed in the warrant."

Daniel frowned.

"I've never seen that file."

The detective carefully opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Emma's heart skipped.

Every picture showed her.

Leaving prenatal appointments.

Shopping for baby clothes.

Walking in the park.

Holding ultrasound images.

Someone had been following her for months.

Sarah looked at Vanessa.

"Care to explain these?"

Vanessa remained silent.

Another envelope fell from the folder.

This one contained receipts.

Private investigators.

GPS trackers.

Long-distance camera rentals.

Emma felt sick.

"You were spying on me?"

Vanessa laughed weakly.

"I needed proof."

"There wasn't any proof to find."

"So I created it."

The words slipped out before she realized what she'd admitted.

The room went still.

Grant slowly turned toward his wife.

"What did you just say?"

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"I..."

"You created it?"

Grant stepped away from her as if she were a stranger.

"You told me you caught Emma cheating."

"I thought she was!"

"So you forged evidence?"

She swallowed.

"I only changed a few screenshots."

Daniel quietly spoke.

"You hired three investigators."

"You tracked my wife while she was pregnant."

"You fabricated conversations."

"You bribed a phone technician."

He paused.

"And you convinced my own family to publicly assault her."

Vanessa's shoulders collapsed.

The polished, confident woman everyone admired disappeared.

In her place stood someone cornered by the truth.

Then Detective Collins asked the question no one expected.

"Why Emma?"

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

Hatred flashed across her face.

"Because she wasn't supposed to exist."

Emma instinctively held her daughter tighter.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"If that baby hadn't been born..."

She stopped herself.

Too late.

Detective Collins narrowed her eyes.

"Hadn't been born... what?"

Vanessa lowered her head.

"Nothing."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Finish the sentence."

Vanessa whispered,

"...Grant would've inherited everything."

The entire dining room understood at once.

None of this had been about revenge.

It had been about inheritance.

Lily had simply been in the way.

That was when another detective entered carrying a cardboard evidence box.

"We searched the guest room."

Sarah looked inside.

"What is it?"

"Laptops."

"External hard drives."

"Burner phones."

"And..."

He carefully lifted a thick leather notebook.

"It looks like a journal."

Vanessa's face turned ghost white.

"No..."

The detective opened the notebook.

Every page contained handwritten plans.

Dates.

Names.

Expenses.

Fake text message drafts.

Lists of relatives to influence.

Even seating arrangements for Thanksgiving dinner.

Emma's stomach turned.

Vanessa hadn't acted impulsively.

She had rehearsed every detail.

Months in advance.

The final page was dated three days earlier.

Across the top, written in elegant handwriting, were the words:

Operation: Thanksgiving

Beneath it:

Humiliate Emma publicly. Force Daniel to reject the baby. Challenge inheritance before attorneys verify DNA.

Detective Collins slowly closed the journal.

"I think we're done here."

Vanessa finally broke.

She buried her face in her hands and sobbed.

But no one felt sorry for her anymore.
