CHAPTER 4: THE WILL NO ONE EXPECTED

CHAPTER 4: THE WILL NO ONE EXPECTED

Detective Sarah Collins placed a leather badge case onto the dining table.

"We have a warrant to seize financial records related to the Bennett Family Foundation."

Vanessa's knees nearly gave out.

Grant stepped backward.

"This is a family matter."

"No," Detective Collins replied.

"It's now a criminal investigation."

Officers immediately began photographing the documents Daniel had assembled.

Emma sat frozen.

Everything had happened so quickly that her split lip was still bleeding.

Daniel quietly knelt beside her.

For the first time since entering the house, he reached out.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"For what?"

"For making you wait."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"I thought exposing them required patience."

His eyes dropped to the bruise forming on her cheek.

"I didn't know they'd hurt you."

Emma saw genuine regret there.

She squeezed his hand.

"You came."

"I always would."

Across the room, Margaret tried to regain control.

"This family has handled its own problems for generations."

The elderly family attorney, Mr. Howard, cleared his throat.

"Actually..."

Everyone turned.

"There is one family matter we haven't discussed."

He carried an aged envelope sealed with dark red wax.

Emma recognized the handwriting immediately.

Daniel's father.

Richard Bennett.

The man who had died eighteen months earlier.

Mr. Howard spoke carefully.

"Richard instructed me to open this only if the family foundation became the subject of fraud or internal conflict."

Grant's confidence vanished.

"You never mentioned another will."

"It wasn't another will."

The attorney broke the seal.

"It was a contingency letter."

He unfolded several pages.

The room became completely silent.

He began reading.

"If you are hearing these words, then someone I loved has betrayed the purpose of this family."

Margaret slowly sat down.

Her husband had anticipated this.

Mr. Howard continued.

"Grant has always desired power."

Grant closed his eyes.

"Daniel has always carried responsibility."

Daniel remained expressionless.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

"If Grant is ever found guilty of stealing from the foundation, he shall receive nothing from my estate."

Gasps echoed around the room.

Grant looked as if he'd been struck.

Mr. Howard turned another page.

"His inheritance shall instead be transferred..."

He paused.

"...to my granddaughter."

Emma frowned.

Granddaughter?

Richard had died months before Lily was born.

The attorney smiled sadly.

"There was an amendment."

He lifted another notarized document.

"Richard updated the trust after learning Emma was pregnant."

Emma covered her mouth.

She had never known.

Mr. Howard finished reading.

"To Lily Bennett, I leave the controlling interest of the Bennett estate, effective immediately upon confirmation of her birth."

The room erupted.

Vanessa screamed.

"That's impossible!"

Grant lunged toward the papers.

Detectives intercepted him before he could reach the attorney.

His voice cracked with desperation.

"That inheritance belongs to me!"

Mr. Howard calmly shook his head.

"It did."

He pointed toward the DNA report.

"Tonight confirmed Lily's legal status."

Daniel wrapped one protective arm around Emma and their daughter.

The attorney smiled warmly.

"Congratulations."

He handed Emma a velvet folder.

"Your daughter is now the majority beneficiary of an estate worth nearly one hundred million dollars."

Vanessa let out a broken sob.

Everything she had orchestrated...

The forged messages.

The public humiliation.

The assault.

The fake affair.

The stolen money.

It had all been for one reason.

To eliminate Lily before anyone discovered she had inherited everything.

And now...

The entire family finally understood why Emma had been chosen as the target.
