CHAPTER 6 – The Trial That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 6 – The Trial That Changed Everything
Three months after Leo's birthday, the story had become national news.
Every major television network covered the shocking collapse of Marco Romano—the once-charismatic husband of one of the country's most successful entrepreneurs. Headlines focused on the attempted fraud, the fabricated claim about Leo's parentage, and the elaborate scheme to seize control of my company.
The hardest part wasn't facing reporters.
It was helping Leo understand why his father was no longer coming home.
Every evening he asked the same question.
"Can people stop being bad?"
I always answered honestly.
"People can choose to become better, sweetheart. But first, they have to admit what they've done."
He would nod quietly, thinking far beyond his five years.
The courtroom was packed on the first day of trial.
Business journalists sat beside legal analysts. Friends, relatives, and former employees filled every available seat.
Marco entered wearing a dark suit instead of his usual expensive designer clothes. He looked older than I remembered.
Valerie arrived separately.
She avoided looking at him.
The prosecution presented weeks of evidence.
The forged financial transfers.
The surveillance footage from my office.
The hidden room inside the mansion.
The files detailing Marco's plan to destroy my reputation.
The recordings recovered from his laptop.
Every piece fit together like a puzzle.
Then came the witness everyone had been waiting for.
Valerie.
She walked slowly to the stand.
"I want to correct something," she began, her voice shaking.
"I lied."
The courtroom became silent.
"I repeated Marco's story because I believed him."
She wiped away tears.
"He told me Andrea had stolen my baby years ago."
"I never questioned him."
The prosecutor asked gently,
"Did you ever give birth to a child?"
Valerie lowered her head.
"No."
The room stirred.
She continued.
"Five years ago... I wasn't pregnant."
"I suffered a miscarriage before I even told anyone."
A tear rolled down her face.
"Marco knew."
I stared at her in disbelief.
"He comforted me."
"He told me fate had another plan for us."
Her voice cracked.
"Then, years later, he convinced me that Andrea had secretly taken my child after I lost consciousness."
She looked toward me for the first time.
"I'm sorry."
"I helped him hurt you."
"I'll regret that for the rest of my life."
The courtroom remained silent.
Not because everyone forgave her.
But because everyone finally understood how deeply Marco had manipulated the people around him.
The defense struggled to respond.
Marco insisted that everyone had misunderstood him.
That the documents had been fabricated.
That the recordings were edited.
That Valerie had turned against him.
But each explanation collapsed under cross-examination.
Finally, the judge spoke.
"The evidence demonstrates a sustained pattern of deception, financial fraud, forgery, witness manipulation, and intentional emotional abuse."
After a brief recess, the verdict was announced.
Guilty.
On every major count.
Marco was sentenced to twelve years in prison, ordered to pay millions in restitution to the company, and permanently stripped of any legal authority over Romano Jewel Group.
The judge also granted me sole legal and physical custody of Leo.
Marco looked toward us one last time.
Leo didn't look back.
He simply squeezed my hand.
As deputies escorted Marco away, he called out softly,
"I'm sorry, son."
May you like
Leo remained silent.
Some wounds were simply too deep for words.
