CHAPTER 4 – The Truth Hidden in the Hospital Records

CHAPTER 4 – The Truth Hidden in the Hospital Records

The distant sound of police sirens echoed through the neighborhood.

For the first time since barging into Leo's birthday party, Marco looked genuinely afraid.

Two detectives entered through the open gate, accompanied by a uniformed officer. The cheerful birthday decorations now stood in painful contrast to the tension that had consumed the celebration.

Detective Sarah Bennett approached calmly.

"Mr. Marco Romano?"

Marco forced a smile.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

"We'll determine that after we've spoken with everyone."

She turned toward me.

"Mrs. Romano, Mr. Collins informed us there may be evidence relating to corporate fraud and possible identity fraud."

I nodded.

"There is something else you need to see."

Ignoring Marco's protests, I walked into the mansion and headed upstairs.

For years, the wall safe in my bedroom had held documents I rarely looked at. I spun the combination, opened the heavy steel door, and removed a blue leather folder marked simply:

LEO.

When I returned to the garden, every guest watched silently.

I handed the folder to Detective Bennett.

Inside were Leo's birth certificate, hospital records, photographs taken minutes after his birth, footprints, medical bracelets, and dozens of prenatal documents.

Valerie laughed.

"Those can all be forged."

"They're originals," I replied.

The detective carefully examined the records before stopping at a sealed envelope from the fertility clinic.

"What is this?"

I swallowed hard.

"I never wanted Leo to know this until he was older."

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a legal agreement dated almost six years earlier.

Marco stared at the paper.

His face turned white.

"No..."

The detective read aloud.

"The patient, Andrea Romano, underwent in-vitro fertilization using her own egg and the sperm of her husband, Marco Romano."

Whispers swept through the crowd.

She continued reading.

"Because of severe pregnancy complications discovered during the second trimester, the attending physicians prepared emergency surrogate documentation in case delivery became impossible."

Valerie's confident posture disappeared.

"What?"

The detective looked at another page.

"The surrogate was never used."

Silence.

"The pregnancy progressed safely after treatment."

She looked directly at Valerie.

"Mrs. Romano carried and delivered Leo herself."

Every person present turned toward Valerie.

She blinked repeatedly.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

The detective held up another document.

"This includes ultrasound images covering all nine months of pregnancy."

My mother quietly wiped tears from her eyes.

"I was there," she whispered.

"I held Andrea's hand during every appointment."

Valerie looked at Marco in complete disbelief.

"You told me she couldn't have children."

Marco couldn't answer.

"You promised the baby was mine!"

Still nothing.

"You said she bought him from me!"

His silence became his confession.

Valerie slowly stepped backward.

"You lied..."

Marco finally exploded.

"I did what I had to do!"

The words echoed across the garden.

"I was tired of living in Andrea's shadow!"

His voice cracked with years of resentment.

"Everyone called it her company."

"Her house."

"Her success."

"I was always just Andrea's husband."

His fists clenched.

"So yes—I lied."

Gasps erupted again.

"I convinced Valerie she had a future with me."

"I convinced her that Leo was hers."

"I promised her everything."

Valerie stared at him as though seeing him for the first time.

"You used me."

"I used everyone."

The confession stunned even the detectives.

Then Mr. Collins quietly added,

"And while manipulating Miss Brooks, Mr. Romano transferred nearly eight million dollars from company accounts into shell corporations under false names."

The detective immediately nodded to the officers.

"Mr. Romano, you're under arrest for fraud, forgery, and destruction of evidence."

As they stepped forward with handcuffs, Marco suddenly shoved one officer aside.

Then he ran.

Straight toward the mansion.

Everyone screamed.

Leo buried his face against me.

"Daddy..."

I held him tighter.

"It's okay."

May you like

But deep inside...

I knew it was far from over.
