CHAPTER 5 – The Secret Room

CHAPTER 5 – The Secret Room
Marco knew the mansion better than anyone.
Instead of running toward the front entrance, he disappeared into the west wing where his private office overlooked the gardens.
The detectives chased after him.
Seconds later, a loud crash echoed through the house.
Then another.
Mr. Collins frowned.
"He's destroying something."
Detective Bennett ordered two officers around the back of the mansion while the others forced open Marco's office door.
A few moments later, one detective shouted,
"We've got him!"
Guests waited anxiously outside.
Nearly fifteen minutes passed before Detective Bennett emerged again.
Her expression had completely changed.
"Mrs. Romano..."
"I need you to come inside."
My father insisted on accompanying me.
The office looked like a tornado had passed through it.
Broken computers.
Smashed hard drives.
Burned papers inside the fireplace.
Marco sat handcuffed in a chair, refusing to look at anyone.
But none of that was what had shocked the detectives.
Behind a bookshelf, they had discovered a hidden room.
Inside were shelves filled with labeled boxes.
Every box carried my name.
My heart pounded as Detective Bennett opened the first one.
Inside were copies of my passport.
Bank statements.
Business contracts.
Even my handwritten journals.
The second box contained hundreds of secretly recorded conversations.
The third held photographs.
Thousands of them.
Pictures of me leaving meetings.
Taking Leo to school.
Having lunch with clients.
Walking in the park.
Some had clearly been taken from long distances.
Others were inside our own home.
I felt sick.
"He's been watching you for years," the detective said quietly.
Another officer walked out carrying a laptop.
"We accessed part of the backup server."
Mr. Collins looked over his shoulder.
"Oh my God..."
"What is it?" I asked.
He turned the screen toward us.
It contained detailed financial plans.
Each file had a date.
Each date matched one of my business trips.
The final folder was titled:
AFTER THE BIRTHDAY.
Detective Bennett opened it.
The room became silent.
Inside was a document outlining Marco's plan.
Step one:
Publicly accuse Andrea of stealing a child.
Step two:
Destroy her business reputation.
Step three:
Force emergency control of company assets through fabricated legal claims.
Step four:
Have Andrea declared mentally unstable.
Step five:
Obtain full custody of Leo.
There was even a draft press release prepared in advance.
My legs nearly gave out.
Everything had been planned.
Not for weeks.
For years.
Then the detective opened one final file.
Unlike the others, it contained only a short video.
The timestamp was from three nights earlier.
Marco sat across from Valerie in a hotel suite.
His voice was perfectly clear.
"After the birthday, Andrea won't have anyone left to believe her."
Valerie smiled.
"And the kid?"
Marco shrugged coldly.
"He'll believe whatever we tell him."
Those words broke something inside me.
Not because my marriage was over.
That had ended long ago.
But because the father Leo adored had seen his own son as nothing more than a tool.
Just then, a tiny voice came from the doorway.
"Daddy..."
Everyone turned.
Leo had quietly followed us despite my mother's attempts to stop him.
He looked at Marco with tears filling his eyes.
"I heard everything."
Marco's expression finally cracked.
"Leo..."
The little boy slowly shook his head.
"You said heroes always protect their family."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"But you were the monster."
No accusation from a detective...
No financial evidence...
No courtroom verdict...
Could have hurt Marco more than the heartbreak in his five-year-old son's eyes.
As officers led him away, Marco turned one last time.
"I'm sorry, Leo."
But the little boy hid behind me and whispered only three words—
May you like
"I love Mommy."
And in that moment, every lie Marco had built over five years finally collapsed forever.
