CHAPTER 6 — THE MOTHER WHO WOULDN'T RUN

CHAPTER 6 — THE MOTHER WHO WOULDN'T RUN

Three hours later...

The airport had become a federal crime scene.

Yellow tape surrounded the terminal.

Investigators photographed everything.

Passengers gave statements.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Inside a secured conference room, the triplets slept peacefully beneath warm airport blankets, completely unaware their lives had almost been stolen.

I watched them breathe.

Only then did my hands begin to shake.

The adrenaline was gone.

The fear finally arrived.

A quiet knock came at the door.

Desmond entered alone.

Gone was the perfectly composed billionaire.

His tie had been removed.

His white shirt was stained with Oliver's tears and airport dust.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally he whispered,

"I'm sorry."

I looked away.

"Eighteen months is a long apology."

"I know."

"You weren't there."

"I know."

"I gave birth alone."

He closed his eyes.

"I know."

"Oliver nearly died twice."

His shoulders collapsed.

"I know."

"I celebrated every birthday."

"Every fever."

"Every first word."

"Every nightmare."

"Without you."

Tears rolled freely down his face.

"There isn't a punishment you could give me that's worse than living with that."

He reached into his jacket and placed a small envelope on the table.

"I found this yesterday."

I frowned.

"What is it?"

"It was hidden in my father's office."

Inside was a bundle of unopened letters.

My handwriting.

Every letter I had mailed to Desmond during my pregnancy.

None had ever been opened.

My vision blurred.

With trembling fingers I unfolded the first one.

Desmond,

Today the doctor heard the heartbeat.

I wish you had been there.

I still believe you'll come.

Another.

Desmond,

The ultrasound surprised everyone.

We're having triplets.

I'm terrified...

...but I still love you.

Another.

Desmond,

They were born today.

They're beautiful.

I named our oldest son Oliver because you once said that was your grandfather's name.

Desmond covered his face.

"I never received them."

"I know."

For eighteen months, two people had loved each other while believing the other had walked away.

A knock interrupted us.

The lead federal marshal entered carrying another folder.

"I wish I had better news."

He placed several photographs on the table.

Security-camera images.

Different cities.

Different dates.

Every picture showed me.

Or the children.

"They kept following us..."

I whispered.

The marshal nodded.

"For sixteen months."

Desmond's fists clenched.

"But that's not the worst part."

He slid over one final photograph.

I stared at it.

The picture had been taken just three nights earlier.

Outside my apartment.

Someone was standing beside my bedroom window.

Watching my sleeping children.

On the back of the photograph, written in black marker, were six chilling words:

"Collect them before the father remembers."

A heavy silence filled the room.

The marshal looked at both of us.

"Harrison Frost is under arrest."

"Katherine is under arrest."

"The kidnappers are in custody."

He paused.

"But based on everything we've uncovered..."

He lowered his voice.

"We believe they're only the first layer."

Desmond looked up.

"What does that mean?"

The marshal answered with a sentence that made the room feel suddenly much colder.

"Someone much more powerful financed this operation."

Before anyone could speak again, every light in the conference room suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then, from somewhere in the hallway...

A child's frightened voice cried out.

May you like

"Mommy..."

Emma was gone.
