CHAPTER 2 — THE FOLDER

CHAPTER 2 — THE FOLDER
The man in the charcoal suit walked directly toward Desmond, ignoring the crowd that had begun slowing around us.
"Mr. Frost," he said calmly. "The documents require your immediate signature."
He extended a thick legal folder.
Desmond barely looked at it.
His eyes never left the three toddlers gathering around my legs.
Oliver clung to my jeans.
Emma continued happily eating her cracker.
Little Noah stared up at the stranger who looked exactly like him.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
Passengers nearby had begun whispering.
"Those kids look just like him..."
"Isn't that Desmond Frost? The billionaire?"
"Oh my God..."
Katherine stepped between us before Desmond could reach the children.
"What ridiculous timing," she laughed.
Then she looked at me with practiced pity.
"Maya...you really shouldn't do this in public."
I frowned.
"Do what?"
"Pretend."
Her smile widened.
"I know you're struggling financially."
She glanced deliberately at my worn sneakers and faded backpack.
"But showing up with three random children and claiming they're Desmond's?"
She shook her head.
"That's desperate."
Several people nearby exchanged uncertain glances.
Desmond finally found his voice.
"Katherine..."
She squeezed his arm.
"Don't let her manipulate you."
Then she lowered her voice just enough for only him to hear.
"This is exactly why your lawyers warned you."
Lawyers?
I stared.
What lawyers?
Before I could ask, the suited man cleared his throat.
"Mr. Frost."
He opened the folder.
"These are emergency guardianship filings."
My stomach tightened.
Guardianship?
"For whom?" Desmond asked.
The lawyer answered without emotion.
"For the three minors."
Every muscle in my body froze.
"What?"
The lawyer continued.
"The petition requests immediate temporary custody based upon documented financial instability, unsuitable living conditions, and medical neglect."
I couldn't breathe.
"What are you talking about?"
He calmly removed photographs.
One after another.
Pictures of my apartment.
The peeling wallpaper.
The broken heater.
Oliver coughing during an asthma attack.
Emma crying while I carried groceries.
Someone had been watching us.
Not once.
For months.
I snatched one photograph.
"This was taken through my bedroom window!"
The lawyer didn't deny it.
Instead he handed another document to Desmond.
"Private investigators have compiled eighteen months of evidence."
Desmond finally looked down.
His face changed instantly.
"What the hell is this?"
Katherine answered before the lawyer could.
"It's necessary."
He slowly turned toward her.
"Necessary?"
"You abandoned them before they were even born."
"They need stability."
She smiled gently.
"And we can provide that."
Silence.
Then she delivered the sentence that made every drop of blood leave my body.
"We're adopting them."
My knees nearly buckled.
"No."
She nodded.
"Yes."
She reached inside her purse and produced a stack of papers.
"Your parental rights can be terminated voluntarily."
She looked directly at me.
"You'll receive enough money to start over somewhere else."
My ears rang.
"You want to buy my children?"
"I want to save them."
"No."
"You can't even afford daycare."
"No."
"You work two jobs."
"No!"
"You sold your grandmother's bracelet just to buy medicine."
She lifted her wrist.
The silver bracelet sparkled under the airport lights.
"And honestly..."
She smiled.
"It looks much better on me."
Something inside me snapped.
Before I realized what I was doing, I grabbed her wrist.
"Take."
Off.
"My."
"Bracelet."
Katherine screamed dramatically.
"Desmond!"
Airport security immediately turned toward us.
"She's attacking me!"
Two officers hurried over.
Passengers began filming.
Phones lifted everywhere.
Katherine instantly hid behind Desmond.
"She's violent!"
One officer stepped between us.
"Ma'am, I need you to calm down."
I pointed at Katherine.
"She's wearing stolen property."
Katherine laughed.
"I purchased it legally."
"Liar."
"I have the receipt."
She reached into her designer handbag and actually produced paperwork.
My heart sank.
Pawn shop receipt.
She really had bought it.
Legally.
Because I had been desperate enough to sell it.
She leaned closer.
"Funny how poverty makes people lose everything."
Desmond suddenly spoke.
"Enough."
Everyone stopped.
Including Katherine.
He looked at the bracelet.
Then at me.
Then at Oliver, who was beginning to wheeze.
The familiar sound hit me like lightning.
Not now...
Please...
Oliver grabbed his tiny chest.
"Mama..."
His breathing became rapid.
Sharp.
Panicked.
I instantly dropped beside him.
"Inhaler."
I dug frantically through the diaper bag.
Not there.
No...
No...
I checked every pocket.
Nothing.
My heart slammed.
The airport rush...
The gate change...
I had left the inhaler in the original boarding area when they suddenly rerouted our flight.
Oliver's lips were beginning to turn pale.
"Mama..."
His voice was barely audible.
I looked toward the security officers.
"Please!"
"I need medical assistance!"
No one moved quickly enough.
Passengers simply watched.
Someone kept recording.
Then Desmond was suddenly beside me.
"What does he need?"
"Asthma inhaler."
"Where?"
"I...I left it at Gate B17 after they changed our flight."
Desmond didn't hesitate.
He pulled out another phone from his briefcase.
Within seconds he barked into it.
"Lock down Terminal C."
Airport employees on nearby radios immediately responded.
"I need an inhaler retrieved from Gate B17."
He looked directly at airport operations.
"I don't care how."
"Use a cart."
"Use security."
"Run."
"Just bring it."
The authority in his voice silenced everyone.
Within seconds, radios across the terminal erupted.
Airport staff scattered in every direction.
Even security officers joined the search.
Katherine stared in disbelief.
"Desmond..."
"They're not even proven to be yours."
He slowly looked at her.
His expression had completely changed.
"They don't have to be."
He turned back to Oliver, gently supporting the little boy's shoulders exactly as doctors recommend.
Instinctively.
Almost naturally.
Oliver looked into his eyes.
For one brief second...
Father and son simply stared at each other.
Then Oliver whispered through struggling breaths,
"You have my eyes."
Desmond's composure shattered.
A single tear rolled down the billionaire's face in front of hundreds of strangers.
And at that exact moment, another voice echoed across the terminal.
"Federal Marshals!"
"Nobody leaves this gate!"
Every head turned.
Six federal agents were marching toward us.
Their leader wasn't looking at me.
He wasn't looking at Desmond.
He pointed directly at Katherine Sterling.
"Ma'am..."
May you like
"We have a warrant for your arrest."
Katherine's confident smile disappeared instantly.
