CHAPTER 7 – The Celebration That Became a Crime Scene

CHAPTER 7 – The Celebration That Became a Crime Scene

Saturday evening arrived with perfect weather.

White lights hung across Susan's backyard.

A live jazz band played near the patio.

Waiters carried silver trays filled with champagne while nearly eighty guests admired the elegant decorations.

Kyle stood in the center of it all wearing a tailored navy-blue suit.

Susan welcomed guests with practiced warmth.

Heather laughed loudly, making sure everyone noticed how successful the Anderson family had become.

No one suspected that several of the "new guests" arriving one by one were not friends at all.

They were federal agents.

Disguised as caterers.

Servers.

Photographers.

Even the valet parking attendants.

Special Agent Daniel Reeves adjusted his tie and quietly spoke into the microphone hidden beneath his collar.

"Everyone stay in position."

"Wait for my signal."

Inside the house, Chloe stood alone in the downstairs bathroom.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight years of trust.

Eight years of believing Kyle loved her.

Tonight all of it would end.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Martin.

The bank confirmed the transfers.

The forged account.

The shell companies.

The offshore payments.

Everything is documented.

It's time.

She slipped the phone into her purse and walked outside.

Kyle tapped a spoon against his champagne glass.

The conversations stopped.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"I just want to thank everyone for believing in our family."

Applause filled the yard.

"My mother taught me that honesty and hard work always win."

Susan smiled proudly.

Heather clapped the loudest.

Kyle continued.

"This year has brought incredible financial success."

"And tonight..."

"I'd like to announce that our consulting company has officially secured over three million dollars in new investments."

More applause.

Then Chloe slowly stood.

"I'd like to say a few words."

Kyle smiled.

"Of course."

He handed her the microphone.

Exactly as she hoped.

She looked around the crowd.

Many of the faces were people who had attended her wedding.

People who had watched her build a career.

People who trusted the Anderson family.

"My husband is right."

She smiled gently.

"Tonight is about honesty."

Kyle nodded confidently.

"And family."

Susan raised her glass.

Chloe took a slow breath.

"So let's begin with family."

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a folder.

Then another.

Then another.

The smiles around the yard slowly disappeared.

"Kyle."

She looked directly at him.

"Would you mind explaining why my sixty-seven-year-old father signed a power of attorney giving you control over his home?"

Kyle's smile froze.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Susan stepped forward.

"Chloe, this isn't the time."

"No."

Chloe replied calmly.

"This is exactly the time."

She held up the notarized authorization.

Several guests leaned closer.

"My father signed this because Kyle told him I had been arrested for financial crimes."

Gasps spread across the yard.

Kyle laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

"It certainly is."

Chloe pressed a small remote.

A projector screen behind the band suddenly lit up.

Martin had arranged everything.

The first image appeared.

The signed power of attorney.

The second.

Bank transfers.

The third.

Corporate filings connecting Susan to the shell company.

The fourth.

Security footage from Sterling Legacy Holdings.

Susan's face drained of color.

Heather whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Kyle looked at Martin standing beside the projector.

"What is this?"

Martin answered.

"Evidence."

Kyle pointed at Chloe.

"She's lying."

Chloe smiled sadly.

"I wondered if you'd say that."

She pressed another button.

The speakers came alive.

Kyle's own voice echoed through the backyard.

"No papers were signed."

Another recording.

"Family never reports family."

Another.

"We made three million dollars."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Guests stared at Kyle in disbelief.

One elderly man slowly placed his drink on the table.

"I can't believe this..."

Susan lunged toward the speaker.

"Turn that off!"

Before she could reach it, Daniel Reeves stepped forward.

"Federal agents!"

Every disguised officer immediately revealed badges.

"Nobody move."

The music stopped.

Champagne glasses shattered on the patio.

Children were quickly escorted inside by uniformed officers.

Panic erupted.

Kyle looked around wildly.

"This is a mistake!"

Reeves calmly handed him a warrant.

"Kyle Anderson..."

"You are under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, money laundering, and multiple counts of financial exploitation of elderly victims."

Susan tried to run toward the back gate.

Two agents intercepted her.

Heather burst into tears.

"I didn't do anything!"

Martin quietly placed photographs in front of her.

"You witnessed everything."

"You signed transfer documents."

"You accepted payments."

Her knees gave out.

Richard Holloway attempted to leave through the front driveway.

More agents were waiting.

Within minutes...

Every member of the conspiracy was in handcuffs.

As Kyle was escorted past Chloe, he stopped.

"You destroyed me."

She looked at him without anger.

"No."

"You destroyed yourself."

May you like

Then she turned away.

She had nothing else to say.
