CHAPTER 3 – The Confession They Never Expected

CHAPTER 3 – The Confession They Never Expected

Saturday arrived under a cloudless Arizona sky.

By nine in the morning, the Anderson family's annual summer gathering was already in full swing. The backyard of Susan's house buzzed with conversation. Folding tables overflowed with food, children chased each other across the lawn, and Kyle moved through the crowd shaking hands like a man with nothing to hide.

Watching him laugh with relatives made Chloe's stomach twist.

He looked so comfortable.

So confident.

As though the future already belonged to him.

Exactly the way a man looked when he believed he had already won.

She stepped out of her car carrying a tray of desserts.

Kyle spotted her immediately.

"There she is!"

He wrapped an arm around her shoulders before anyone could speak.

"My wife finally came home from conquering Salt Lake City."

The relatives applauded.

Several congratulated her on closing another major business contract.

Susan smiled proudly, pretending to be the perfect mother-in-law.

"My son is lucky to have such a successful wife."

The hypocrisy almost made Chloe laugh.

Yesterday this same woman had mocked her father for bringing vegetables from Nebraska.

Today she was praising her in front of guests.

Every smile was a costume.

Every compliment was another lie.

Hidden beneath Chloe's blouse, clipped inside the neckline, the recording pen Martin had given her silently captured every word.

She only needed Kyle to make one mistake.

By noon, people gathered around the grill.

Kyle poured himself another beer.

His laughter grew louder.

His guard grew lower.

Heather wandered over carrying a plate.

"So... did your dad make it home?"

Chloe nodded.

"He did."

"I hope he wasn't too embarrassed."

Kyle chuckled.

"Norman worries about everything."

Chloe looked at him innocently.

"He seemed grateful that you helped him with his loan."

Kyle's eyes flashed toward Susan.

Only for a second.

Long enough.

Susan answered before he could.

"Kyle has such a generous heart."

"He can't say no when family asks for help."

Several relatives nodded in agreement.

One uncle clapped Kyle on the back.

"That's the Anderson way."

Kyle smiled modestly.

"I just wanted to help Norman organize his finances."

Chloe tilted her head.

"So you never actually borrowed money from him?"

Kyle laughed.

"Of course not."

Strike one.

The recording pen captured every syllable.

Later that afternoon, Chloe found Kyle alone beside the garage refrigerator.

Perfect.

She closed the door behind her.

"I've been thinking."

He smiled.

"About what?"

"My father's property."

His shoulders stiffened.

"What about it?"

"I was wondering..."

She lowered her voice.

"If someone borrowed three million dollars using his land..."

Kyle forced a laugh.

"Where would you get an idea like that?"

"I don't know."

"I just imagined how terrible it would be."

He took a sip of beer.

"You're overthinking."

"No papers were signed."

Strike two.

She stepped closer.

"So he never gave you power of attorney?"

Kyle looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

Strike three.

He had just denied documents carrying his own signature.

The trap tightened.

That evening, after most relatives had gone home, Chloe suggested they stop for dinner on the way back.

Kyle agreed without hesitation.

They chose a quiet steakhouse.

Soft music filled the room.

Candles flickered across polished wooden tables.

It looked like the setting for a romantic evening.

Instead, it became the setting for Kyle's confession.

Halfway through dinner, Chloe sighed dramatically.

"I'm worried."

"About what?"

"My company."

Kyle leaned forward.

"What happened?"

"I heard another director is being investigated."

His eyebrows lifted.

"For fraud?"

She nodded.

"It made me wonder..."

"If someone forged financial documents..."

"Could they actually go to prison?"

Kyle's face changed almost imperceptibly.

"Depends."

"On what?"

"Whether anyone reports it."

She watched him carefully.

"What if family is involved?"

He smirked.

"Family never reports family."

Those five words echoed inside her mind.

Family never reports family.

Kyle believed blood protected criminals.

He believed love guaranteed silence.

He had absolutely no idea who he was married to.

After dinner they drove home in silence.

Kyle fell asleep within minutes of climbing into bed.

Chloe waited another hour.

Then she quietly slipped downstairs.

Martin was already waiting in his car across the street.

She handed him the recording pen through the passenger window.

"Did he confess?"

She nodded.

"He lied three different ways."

Martin plugged the recorder into his laptop.

Together they listened.

Kyle denying the loan.

Kyle denying the power of attorney.

Kyle claiming no documents existed.

When the audio ended, Martin looked at her.

"This is excellent."

"But..."

"What?"

"It still isn't enough."

Her heart sank.

"He admitted nothing directly."

"So what now?"

Martin smiled.

"We make him confess on purpose."

The next morning Chloe woke to the smell of coffee.

Kyle stood in the kitchen smiling.

"I have good news."

She pretended to yawn.

"What is it?"

"I've been thinking."

"About your dad."

"Oh?"

"I want to drive to Nebraska next week."

"Why?"

"I feel guilty."

"I want to help him reorganize his finances."

Her blood ran cold.

He wasn't finished.

He intended to make her father sign even more documents.

The greed had become uncontrollable.

She smiled warmly.

"I think he'd love that."

Kyle kissed her forehead.

"I'm glad you understand."

As he walked away, Chloe looked out the kitchen window.

Tomorrow morning.

Nine o'clock.

The loan would officially close.

Unless she stopped it first.

Or...

Unless she let it happen.

An idea suddenly formed.

A dangerous one.

If the money reached Kyle's company...

Every dollar could be traced.

Every transfer recorded.

Every accomplice identified.

Instead of catching one thief...

She could expose the entire network.

She picked up her phone.

May you like

"Martin..."

"I've changed the plan."
