CHAPTER 6 – The Secret Account

CHAPTER 6 – The Secret Account

At eight o'clock the following morning, Martin burst into Chloe's office carrying a laptop.

"You need to see this immediately."

She closed the conference room door.

"What happened?"

Martin turned the screen toward her.

"I followed the transfers again."

"The money moved?"

"Twice."

He pointed at a series of transactions.

Three million dollars had entered Sterling Legacy Holdings.

Within hours—

One million disappeared into an offshore account.

Another million purchased commercial real estate.

The final million...

Martin zoomed in.

Chloe frowned.

"What is that account?"

"It isn't in Kyle's name."

"Or Susan's."

"Or Heather's."

"Then whose is it?"

Martin inhaled slowly.

"You won't believe me."

"Try me."

He clicked.

The account holder appeared.

Norman Walker.

Chloe stared in disbelief.

"My father?"

Martin nodded.

"Someone opened a bank account using his identity."

Her blood turned cold.

"They're framing him."

"Exactly."

"If authorities ever investigate..."

"It will look like your father received the money."

She covered her mouth.

Every step had been calculated.

Not only would they steal Norman's property—

They intended to make him appear to be the criminal.

Martin immediately contacted a federal financial crimes investigator he had worked with years earlier.

By noon, Special Agent Daniel Reeves arrived.

After reviewing the evidence for nearly an hour, he leaned back in his chair.

"This isn't ordinary fraud."

"What is it?" Chloe asked.

"It's identity theft."

"Wire fraud."

"Money laundering."

"And likely racketeering."

He looked directly at Chloe.

"If we can prove multiple victims..."

"This becomes a federal case."

That afternoon another breakthrough arrived.

Martin's investigator had obtained security footage from Sterling Legacy Holdings.

The video clearly showed Susan entering Richard Holloway's office.

But that wasn't the surprise.

Ten minutes later—

Kyle entered through a private entrance.

Then Heather.

All three met behind closed doors for nearly ninety minutes.

When they finally emerged, Richard handed Kyle a sealed envelope.

Martin froze the final frame.

"There."

"What?"

Richard and Kyle shook hands.

Kyle accepted a small black flash drive before leaving.

"A payoff?"

Martin nodded.

"Or records."

Either way, that flash drive had become the most important piece of evidence in the entire investigation.

Meanwhile, Kyle remained blissfully unaware.

That evening he announced exciting news during dinner.

"We're hosting a celebration this weekend."

Susan smiled immediately.

"What are we celebrating?"

"Our biggest business success yet."

Heather laughed.

"I'll invite everyone."

Relatives.

Neighbors.

Business associates.

Church members.

Nearly eighty guests.

Kyle lifted his wine glass.

"This family's future has never looked brighter."

Chloe raised hers as well.

"You're right."

She smiled calmly.

"It'll be a celebration nobody will ever forget."

Kyle mistook her smile for love.

Susan mistook it for acceptance.

Heather mistook it for weakness.

None of them realized that Special Agent Reeves had already begun preparing federal arrest warrants.

And if everything went according to plan...

May you like

Their celebration would end not with champagne—

But with handcuffs.
