CHAPTER 5 — The Basement Recordings

CHAPTER 5 — The Basement Recordings

Hunter's hands trembled as he picked up the flash drive from the hallway floor.

There was no return address.

No fingerprints.

Only two words written in thick black marker:

BASEMENT CAMERA

Mrs. Joyce immediately reached for it.

"Give it to me."

Hunter pulled his hand away.

"No."

For the first time in years, he saw genuine fear in his mother's eyes.

"What exactly is on this?"

"It's nothing," she answered too quickly.

"An old security backup."

His father suddenly stood.

"We should watch it."

Mrs. Joyce snapped toward him.

"No!"

The room fell silent.

Hunter slowly walked into the study and inserted the flash drive into his laptop.

A folder appeared.

IRONWOOD HOUSE – SECURITY ARCHIVE

More than one hundred video files.

The earliest dated back almost four years.

Hunter clicked the first recording.

The grainy basement camera showed stacks of boxes, old furniture, and filing cabinets.

A few seconds later, Mrs. Joyce walked into view with Brooke.

Neither knew they were being recorded.

Mrs. Joyce unlocked a metal cabinet.

Inside were folders labeled with names.

Hunter leaned closer.

One folder read:

JAMIE PATTERSON

His heart stopped.

The video continued.

Mrs. Joyce opened the folder.

Inside were printed bank statements, copies of Jamie's résumé, family photographs, property records, and handwritten notes.

Brooke laughed.

"You've been collecting information on her for months."

Mrs. Joyce smiled.

"A smart woman prepares."

Hunter felt sick.

The second recording was worse.

Mrs. Joyce sat at the basement table speaking with a man in a gray suit.

The audio was faint but understandable.

"The Patterson girl is perfect."

The man asked,

"Does she suspect anything?"

Mrs. Joyce laughed.

"She thinks Hunter loves her."

Hunter stared at the screen in disbelief.

The date...

Three months before he had even proposed.

Melissa received a copy of the videos less than an hour later.

She immediately called Detective Alvarez.

"You need to see this."

Within thirty minutes investigators obtained a search warrant for the Collins residence.

At sunrise, three sheriff's vehicles and two unmarked detective cars pulled into the driveway.

Mrs. Joyce opened the door wearing her robe.

"What is this?"

Detective Alvarez handed her the warrant.

"We're searching the property for evidence related to financial fraud, identity theft, insurance fraud, and conspiracy."

Her face turned ghost white.

The search lasted nearly eight hours.

Officers recovered:

  • Multiple folders containing confidential financial records belonging to Jamie and her family.

  • Copies of forged signatures.

  • Blank insurance forms.

  • USB drives with scanned identification documents.

  • A notebook listing wealthy women who had dated Hunter over the previous decade.

Each name included handwritten comments.

Family assets.

Inheritance potential.

Career income.

Marriage possibility.

Detective Alvarez slowly closed the notebook.

"This wasn't random."

Melissa nodded.

"It looks organized."

Meanwhile, Jamie sat in her father's office reviewing old emails.

An accountant knocked gently.

"Miss Patterson..."

"You should see this."

He projected financial records onto the conference room screen.

For nearly eighteen months, Jamie had unknowingly paid thousands of dollars every month.

Mortgage payments.

Credit card bills.

Business debts.

Medical insurance.

Luxury vacations.

Brooke's university tuition.

Hunter's golf membership.

His parents' property taxes.

The total appeared at the bottom.

$418,760.34

Jamie stared silently.

Not because of the amount.

Because she had never realized how carefully Hunter had manipulated her into believing every payment was "temporary."

Her father quietly placed a hand on her shoulder.

"You weren't foolish."

"You trusted someone who worked very hard to earn that trust."

That afternoon national news stations began reporting the case.

The headline spread rapidly across television and social media:

NEWLYWED CLAIMS FAMILY USED MARRIAGE TO ACCESS HER FINANCES

Former coworkers of Hunter began contacting investigators.

One woman claimed he had pressured her into cosigning a vehicle loan.

Another said Mrs. Joyce constantly asked about her inheritance.

A third admitted she ended the relationship after Hunter insisted on seeing her bank statements before proposing.

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

Late that evening Detective Alvarez called Jamie.

"We've identified the anonymous sender."

"Who was it?"

"The previous owner of the Ironwood house."

Jamie frowned.

"He installed hidden security cameras after repeated burglaries years ago."

"When he sold the house, he forgot one basement camera still existed."

"The recordings were automatically backed up to an old cloud account."

Jamie whispered,

"So someone found them?"

"His grandson was cleaning old files and recognized your face after seeing the news."

For the first time since the assault...

Jamie smiled.

The truth had found its own way home.

But before the day ended...

Detective Alvarez received the forensic report on Jamie's alleged life insurance policy.

He read the final line twice.

Then immediately called Melissa.

"We have a serious problem."

"What happened?"

"The signature wasn't simply forged."

"It was witnessed."

Melissa frowned.

"By whom?"

The detective answered quietly.

May you like

"Hunter."

"And his mother."
