CHAPTER 3 — The Recording They Forgot

CHAPTER 3 — The Recording They Forgot

Jamie stared at the phone.

Her pulse pounded so loudly she barely heard the young woman's next words.

"My name is Emily. Brooke invited me over because we were supposed to study together. I was upstairs when everything happened."

Jamie exchanged a glance with Melissa.

Melissa immediately switched the call to speaker.

Emily continued.

"I wasn't trying to spy on anyone. I had been recording a short video for social media in Brooke's room. When the yelling started, I forgot to stop recording."

"How much did it capture?" Melissa asked.

A long pause.

"Everything."

An hour later, Emily arrived at Melissa's law office carrying her phone with trembling hands.

She looked terrified.

"I don't want anyone to know I gave this to you."

Melissa smiled reassuringly.

"You'll be protected."

Emily unlocked her phone and handed it over.

The recording began with laughter from upstairs.

Then footsteps.

Voices floated up from the kitchen.

Mrs. Joyce.

Hunter.

Brooke.

The picture shook as Emily accidentally pointed the camera toward the bedroom floor.

Only voices could be heard.

Then Mrs. Joyce laughed.

"Don't worry. Today she'll finally understand she's not a Patterson anymore."

Brooke giggled.

"I can't wait to see whether she cries."

Hunter answered calmly.

"If she argues, I'll handle it."

Emily's breathing became audible behind the camera.

Seconds later Jamie's voice entered.

Soft.

Polite.

"I saved Brooke a plate. I'll warm it up."

Mrs. Joyce replied sharply.

"Unacceptable."

Brooke deliberately raised her voice.

"You expect me to eat leftovers?"

Then came Hunter.

"You embarrassed my family."

A loud crack echoed through the recording.

Emily gasped.

Jamie's body hit the cabinet.

No one rushed to help.

Instead...

Mrs. Joyce calmly said,

"Good."

Hunter's breathing filled the room.

"Now maybe she'll learn."

Brooke laughed.

"I told you she'd stop acting so confident."

Then another sound.

The crash of the dining table flipping over.

Dishes shattered across the floor.

Jamie's voice, steady despite everything:

"The apartment in Oak Ridge is in my name. The credit cards are mine. Starting today, your family can live on what it actually has."

Silence.

Mrs. Joyce whispered words that made everyone in Melissa's office freeze.

"She doesn't know about the insurance money."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke for nearly a minute.

Melissa replayed the final sentence.

Again.

And again.

"She doesn't know about the insurance money."

Jamie frowned.

"What insurance money?"

Her father slowly leaned forward.

"I've never heard Hunter mention insurance."

Melissa was already taking notes.

"We're looking at more than domestic violence."

That afternoon Melissa filed for an emergency protective order.

She also requested preservation of all electronic evidence before anyone could delete messages.

Within hours subpoenas were prepared for phone records, financial accounts, and security cameras near Mrs. Joyce's home.

Then another surprise arrived.

Jamie's bank manager called personally.

"There have been three attempts today to access your investment account."

Jamie stiffened.

"I didn't authorize anything."

"We know."

"The person claimed to be your husband."

Melissa immediately smiled.

"He just made another mistake."

Attempted financial fraud.

Another piece of evidence.

Across town, Hunter's confidence was beginning to crack.

His friends weren't answering.

His credit cards had stopped working.

The apartment no longer belonged to him.

When he checked his banking app, every automatic payment connected to Jamie had disappeared.

His car loan.

Canceled.

His phone plan.

Canceled.

Even the expensive golf club membership Jamie had quietly paid for every month...

Gone.

Hunter stormed into his mother's living room.

"You told me she'd never leave!"

Mrs. Joyce crossed her arms.

"She'll be back."

Hunter slammed his fist against the wall.

"You said her father would never choose her over business!"

Mrs. Joyce's expression shifted.

"He won't destroy his reputation."

Hunter wasn't so sure anymore.

That evening local sheriff's deputies returned.

This time they weren't delivering paperwork.

They wanted statements.

Hunter insisted,

"It was one slap."

The deputy calmly replied,

"So you admit striking your wife?"

Hunter froze.

Mrs. Joyce interrupted.

"It was discipline."

The deputy slowly looked up.

"Discipline?"

She realized too late what she'd said.

The deputy quietly wrote another note.

No one in the room noticed the body camera recording every word.

Late that night Melissa received another email.

No sender name.

Only one attachment.

Collins_Family_GroupChat.pdf

She opened it.

The messages began weeks before the wedding.

Brooke:
"After they're married, she'll pay for everything."

Mrs. Joyce:
"Act sweet until the paperwork is done."

Hunter:
"She trusts me completely."

Brooke:
"Dad says the Patterson money will solve all our debts."

Then the final message, sent the night before the wedding:

Hunter:
"Tomorrow she officially becomes our family's ATM."

Melissa slowly closed the laptop.

"This marriage wasn't built on love."

William Patterson looked at his daughter.

"It was planned."

The next morning, every member of the Collins family received the same envelope.

Inside was a notice that froze them where they stood.

NOTICE OF CIVIL ACTION

Claims included:

  • Domestic assault.

  • Intentional emotional distress.

  • Financial fraud investigation.

  • Conspiracy to obtain property through deception.

Hunter stared at the final page.

Then his hands began to shake.

Because attached behind the lawsuit...

was a printed transcript of the recording they thought no one would ever hear.

And at the very bottom...

one handwritten sentence from Jamie.

May you like

"You told me to learn my place.

Now you'll learn yours."
