CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Debt

CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Debt
Hunter had barely finished reading the lawsuit when another envelope arrived.
This one wasn't from Jamie's attorney.
It was from the bank.
NOTICE OF LOAN DEFAULT
He frowned.
"What loan?"
Mrs. Joyce snatched the papers from his hands.
Her face lost all color.
Hidden among the documents were four overdue business loans totaling nearly $480,000.
Hunter looked at his father.
"Dad... what is this?"
His father lowered his head.
"I was going to tell you after the honeymoon."
"You borrowed almost half a million dollars?"
His father whispered,
"To save the construction company."
Hunter felt sick.
"You said the business was profitable."
"It hasn't made money in three years."
The truth exploded through the room.
The Collins family had secretly survived by borrowing against everything they owned.
Their home.
Their vehicles.
Their retirement savings.
Even Brooke's college tuition had been financed with loans.
Every month, Jamie's generous financial support had covered expenses while the family pretended to be wealthy.
Mrs. Joyce finally admitted the truth.
"If you had married someone poor, we'd have lost everything."
Hunter stared at her in disbelief.
"So... you wanted me to marry Jamie because of her money?"
Mrs. Joyce answered without shame.
"Of course."
For the first time in his life...
Hunter realized he had been manipulated too.
But unlike Jamie...
He had chosen to become part of it.
Meanwhile, Jamie returned to work.
Bruises still marked her face, but she refused to hide them with makeup.
Patients recognized her.
Coworkers quietly offered support.
That afternoon the hospital director called her into his office.
"We've received dozens of calls."
Jamie sighed.
"From Hunter?"
"No."
"From pharmaceutical companies."
She looked confused.
"They heard what happened."
"They're asking whether you're willing to lead a new research division."
Jamie blinked.
The promotion came with nearly double her salary.
For years Hunter had insisted she turn down similar opportunities because they would require travel.
"You don't need a bigger career," he had always said.
"You need more time for family."
Now she understood why.
The less independent she became...
the easier she would be to control.
That evening Melissa called with unexpected news.
"We found the insurance policy mentioned in the recording."
Jamie sat upright.
"What does it say?"
"It names Hunter as beneficiary."
"For what?"
Melissa hesitated.
"Your life."
Silence filled the room.
"It was purchased six weeks before the wedding."
Jamie's blood ran cold.
"The coverage amount..."
Melissa took a slow breath.
"...is five million dollars."
Jamie could barely speak.
"I never signed any policy."
Melissa answered quietly,
"That's exactly why the investigators are involved."
Across town, detectives obtained a warrant for financial records.
One discovery immediately caught their attention.
Someone had submitted electronic documents using Jamie's digital signature.
The timestamps matched periods when Jamie had been working twelve-hour hospital shifts.
Forgery.
Identity theft.
Possible insurance fraud.
The investigation was no longer just about one slap.
It had become something far larger.
Late that night, Hunter's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A deep voice spoke only one sentence.
"You'd better tell the police everything before your mother does."
The line went dead.
Hunter slowly looked toward the hallway where Mrs. Joyce was sleeping.
For the first time...
He wondered whether the woman who raised him had been hiding far more dangerous secrets than anyone imagined.
And downstairs...
Someone slipped another anonymous envelope under the Collins family's front door.
Inside was a flash drive labeled in black marker:
"Basement Camera."
May you like
No one in the house knew that years of hidden recordings were waiting to expose every lie they had ever told.
