CHAPTER 7: THE MAN WHO WALKED OUT OF THE FIRE

CHAPTER 7: THE MAN WHO WALKED OUT OF THE FIRE

"Scalpel."

The operating room erupted into controlled urgency.

Doctors worked with practiced precision while the fetal monitor filled the room with one terrifying rhythm.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Each tone came farther apart than the last.

"The baby's heart rate is dropping!"

"Mother's pressure?"

"Eighty over fifty."

"Move!"

I fought to keep my eyes open.

Everything blurred beneath the surgical lights.

The last thing I heard before anesthesia pulled me under was the doctor's voice.

"She's crashing."

Then—

Silence.

Outside the operating room, Daniel Mercer never took his eyes off the doors.

Agent Brooks approached with another encrypted call.

"You need to hear this."

Mercer answered.

Seconds later, his expression hardened.

"The DNA report?"

He listened.

Then looked toward the operating room.

"The body on Marcus's jet..."

"...isn't Marcus."

Brooks closed her eyes.

"I knew it."

"It belonged to one of his private security contractors."

"So Marcus is alive."

Mercer nodded.

"And now we know why he disappeared."

Almost immediately, every phone carried by the federal agents buzzed at once.

A security breach.

Not at the hospital.

At the federal evidence vault.

Someone had broken in.

Nothing had been stolen—

Except one file.

Project Genesis.

Mercer whispered to himself,

"So that's what this was always about."

Minutes later...

A baby's cry pierced the operating room.

Strong.

Loud.

Alive.

Every doctor in the room smiled with relief.

"A girl."

"She's breathing perfectly."

Outside, the agents released the breath they had all been holding.

The chief obstetrician stepped out.

"Mother is stable."

"The baby is healthy."

Mercer smiled for the first time.

"What time?"

"11:58 p.m."

Brooks looked through the nursery window.

The tiny newborn wrapped her fingers around the nurse's hand.

"So many people tried to stop that child from being born."

Mercer answered quietly,

"And they failed."

Two hours later, while I slept in recovery, a nurse wheeled my daughter into the room.

She had dark hair.

My mother's eyes.

And an impossibly peaceful face.

I whispered through tears,

"Hello, Emma."

The nurse smiled.

"Beautiful name."

I kissed my daughter's forehead.

For the first time in months...

I felt hope.

Until every light in the room suddenly went out.

Emergency lighting activated.

One dim red glow filled the room.

The nurse frowned.

"Another outage?"

The door slowly opened.

A doctor entered wearing a surgical mask.

"I'll take the baby for additional screening."

The nurse looked confused.

"We already finished the examination."

"No," the man answered calmly.

"New federal protocol."

Something about his voice felt wrong.

Too familiar.

Too controlled.

The nurse reached for the chart.

"I wasn't informed—"

Before she finished, the "doctor" struck her across the neck.

She collapsed instantly.

He locked the door.

Then removed his surgical mask.

Marcus Vale smiled.

"I told you..."

"...the next driver wouldn't miss."

May you like

He lifted Emma from the bassinet.

I screamed.
