CHAPTER 6: THE BIRTH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6: THE BIRTH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Federal agents flooded the maternity ward.

Parents clutched newborns.

Doctors barricaded doors.

Hospital staff rushed incubators into secure rooms.

The entire floor had become a battlefield without a single shot fired.

Mercer grabbed my hospital bed.

"We're moving."

"I can't walk."

"You won't have to."

Two agents pushed my bed through a maze of emergency corridors.

Behind us, alarms echoed continuously.

Ahead, reinforced security doors opened one after another.

We finally reached a section of the hospital I had never known existed.

No signs.

No visitors.

No windows.

Only steel doors and biometric scanners.

"What is this place?" I asked.

Mercer answered quietly.

"A federal medical safe site."

"This hospital was built with it decades ago."

As the doors sealed behind us, Brooks finally received a secure transmission.

She answered immediately.

"Brooks."

She listened.

Her face drained of color.

"Repeat that."

Silence.

Then she slowly lowered the phone.

Mercer looked up.

"What happened?"

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"We found Marcus."

I waited.

"He wasn't running."

"He was found."

"Where?"

She swallowed.

"His private jet landed at a private airfield."

"When local authorities boarded..."

"They found every passenger dead."

The room froze.

"What about Marcus?"

"They identified his body."

I couldn't breathe.

Marcus...

Dead?

After everything?

It felt impossible.

Mercer didn't react.

Instead, he asked one question.

"Was dental identification confirmed?"

"No."

"Fingerprint?"

"No."

He nodded slowly.

"Then don't assume he's dead."

Brooks looked confused.

"The body was burned."

"Exactly."

Mercer folded his arms.

"Marcus planned everything too carefully."

"If I wanted the world to believe I was dead..."

"...I'd leave them a body."

Before anyone could continue, a sharp pain tore through my abdomen.

I gasped.

Another contraction hit.

Harder.

The doctor who had just entered checked the monitor.

His expression changed instantly.

"We're out of time."

"What?"

"The stress has triggered labor."

"I'm only thirty-four weeks."

"I know."

Another contraction bent me forward.

The baby's heartbeat accelerated.

The doctor looked at Mercer.

"We're delivering today."

"No choice."

Within minutes I was rushed into an emergency operating suite.

Doctors surrounded me.

Nurses prepared surgical equipment.

Outside the reinforced doors, armed federal agents stood guard.

Not because I was important.

Because the child I carried had become the center of a conspiracy powerful enough to kill for.

The anesthesiologist leaned close.

"Sarah."

"I need you to stay calm."

I nodded through tears.

"I'll try."

A nurse suddenly looked toward the fetal monitor.

"Doctor..."

The heartbeat had begun to slow.

Everyone moved faster.

The lead obstetrician didn't hesitate.

"Emergency C-section."

"Now."

As the surgical lights descended above me, Mercer stood just outside the operating room window.

For the first time since I'd met him...

He looked afraid.

Not for me.

For the baby.

The doors sealed shut.

May you like

The clock on the wall ticked toward midnight.

And somewhere, beyond the walls of the hospital, someone was already preparing for the moment my child took their very first breath... because they intended to be there when it happened.
