CHAPTER 3: THE HOSPITAL UNDER GUARD

CHAPTER 3: THE HOSPITAL UNDER GUARD

The ambulance doors burst open before the vehicle had fully stopped.

"Thirty-two-year-old female," the paramedic called. "Thirty-four weeks pregnant. Abdominal trauma from a fall. Possible placental injury."

Doctors and nurses surrounded my stretcher.

Bright surgical lights blurred overhead as I was rushed through the emergency entrance.

"Baby's heart rate?"

"One-fifty-two."

"Mother's blood pressure is dropping."

My vision flickered.

The last thing I expected to see before passing through the examination doors was the same woman from the courthouse.

Special Agent Naomi Brooks.

She wasn't following me as a witness.

She was protecting me.

Hours later...

I woke to the steady beep of monitors.

My first instinct was panic.

"My baby?"

A doctor smiled gently.

"The baby is stable."

Relief hit so hard that tears spilled down my cheeks.

"But," he continued carefully, "you suffered significant stress and mild placental separation. We managed to stop the bleeding, but you'll remain under observation."

I placed both hands over my stomach.

A tiny kick answered.

"Thank you..."

The doctor nodded.

"Someone has been waiting to speak with you."

Before I could answer, Naomi Brooks entered.

Only now she wasn't alone.

An older man in a dark blue suit accompanied her.

Gray hair.

Military posture.

Eyes that noticed everything.

He introduced himself simply.

"My name is Daniel Mercer."

No title.

No agency.

Nothing.

Yet every nurse who passed the doorway instinctively lowered their voice.

Mercer sat beside my bed.

"Mrs. Vale."

"I owe you an apology."

I frowned.

"For what?"

"We should have reached you weeks ago."

My heartbeat quickened.

"You know what's in those documents."

"I do."

"And Marcus?"

"He suspects."

The room became painfully quiet.

Mercer folded his hands.

"Do you remember the night your husband came home covered in blood?"

My breath caught.

It had happened almost nine months earlier.

Marcus had claimed he'd been mugged.

His expensive watch had still been on his wrist.

His wallet untouched.

The story had never made sense.

"I remember."

Mercer nodded.

"You photographed his jacket."

I stared.

"I... never told anyone that."

"You uploaded the images to encrypted cloud storage after your husband deleted them from your phone."

Every hair on my arms stood up.

"You found them."

"We did."

My mind raced back.

Months earlier...

Marcus had started coming home at strange hours.

Burner phones.

Locked offices.

Meetings that weren't on his calendar.

Then came the truck.

The near-fatal crash.

The unexplained surveillance outside my apartment after I left him.

I hadn't trusted anyone.

Not even local police.

So I had copied everything.

Receipts.

Emails.

Financial statements.

Security footage.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Every strange detail.

I hid them inside the one place Marcus would never willingly search.

My pregnancy file.

Mercer slid a tablet onto my bed.

"Watch."

The screen displayed security footage.

It was grainy.

A parking garage.

Marcus.

Another man.

A black duffel bag.

Money exchanged hands.

Then...

The truck driver.

My stomach clenched.

The timestamp was two days before the collision that nearly killed me.

"No..."

I whispered.

Mercer paused the video.

"The driver disappeared forty-eight hours later."

My fingers trembled.

"So he really..."

"Yes."

"The crash was intentional."

I closed my eyes.

Marcus hadn't been bluffing in court.

He had confessed because he believed I had nothing left to expose him.

He'd been wrong.

Before I could ask another question, alarms suddenly sounded outside my room.

A nurse shouted.

"Security!"

Another voice echoed through the hallway.

"Someone's trying to enter without authorization!"

Naomi Brooks was already moving.

She pulled open the door.

Two armed federal officers sprinted past.

Mercer remained seated.

Completely calm.

Almost expecting this.

Seconds later, one officer returned.

"Sir."

"We caught him."

"Who?"

"The man was dressed as hospital maintenance."

"He had forged credentials."

"And..."

The officer hesitated.

"He was carrying a suppressed handgun."

The room froze.

My blood turned cold.

"He was asking specifically for Mrs. Sarah Vale."

May you like

Naomi slowly looked at me.

"I don't think Marcus is waiting for the divorce anymore."
