Chapter 7: Justice Had the Final Word

Chapter 7: Justice Had the Final Word

The visitor who signed into the county jail that Monday morning wasn't Adrian's attorney.

It was his mother.

Margaret Castillo had ignored every call I made after I discovered Isabella's injuries. During the investigation, she had publicly defended her son, telling anyone who would listen that I was exaggerating to gain sympathy and full custody.

Now she sat across from Adrian behind a thick sheet of reinforced glass.

"What have you done?" she whispered.

Adrian looked exhausted. The expensive suits were gone, replaced by an orange jail uniform that hung loosely from his shoulders.

"You have to help me."

"I can't."

"You have to talk to Mariana."

Margaret slowly shook her head.

"I went to court."

"So?"

"I watched the videos."

Adrian's face turned pale.

She leaned closer to the glass.

"I defended you because I believed you."

Her voice cracked.

"But after seeing what happened to Isabella..."

She closed her eyes.

"I don't recognize the son I raised."

When the visit ended, Adrian remained seated, staring at the empty chair long after his mother had walked away.

For the first time, there was no one left willing to excuse what he had done.

Two months later, the criminal trial finally began.

Unlike the preliminary hearings, this courtroom was filled with a jury.

The prosecution called more than twenty witnesses over the course of three weeks.

Doctors.

Forensic specialists.

Child psychologists.

Police officers.

Financial investigators.

Neighbors.

Rosa.

Each testimony reinforced the last.

Every lie Adrian and Valentina had told unraveled beneath documented evidence.

Their defense tried to argue that Isabella had been emotionally confused by my long absences due to work.

The prosecutor stood during closing arguments and held up a framed photograph taken the day Isabella was born.

It showed Adrian crying while holding his newborn daughter.

"This man once knew how to love this child," he said quietly.

"But love is not measured by promises."

He turned toward the jury.

"It is measured by protection."

"And when she needed him most..."

He pointed toward Adrian.

"...he chose cruelty."

The courtroom remained silent.

No dramatic objections.

No interruptions.

Just truth.

The jury deliberated for less than five hours.

When they returned, no one could read their expressions.

The foreperson stood.

"We find the defendant, Adrian Castillo..."

She looked down at the verdict form.

"...guilty on all counts."

Adrian lowered his head.

Valentina gripped the edge of the defense table as her own guilty verdict followed moments later.

The judge imposed sentence that afternoon.

Adrian received a lengthy prison term for child abuse, unlawful imprisonment of a minor, child neglect, conspiracy, and witness intimidation.

Valentina was also sentenced to prison despite her repeated attempts to blame Adrian for everything.

Before deputies escorted them away, Adrian turned toward me one final time.

"I'm sorry."

The words echoed through the courtroom.

Months earlier, I had imagined hearing that apology.

I thought it might heal something.

It didn't.

Some wounds are simply too deep.

I looked at him calmly.

"Save your apology."

He frowned.

"The person who deserved it is the little girl whose childhood you stole."

May you like

He lowered his eyes.

That was the last time I ever spoke to him.
