Chapter 3

The first court order arrived less than twenty-four hours later.

Adrian was forbidden from removing Isabella from my care until the investigation concluded.

When I signed the paperwork, my hands remained steady.

Not because I wasn't angry.

Because anger had already transformed into purpose.

The detective assigned to our case, Sergeant Daniel Brooks, spread several photographs across the conference table.

"Mrs. Castillo," he said carefully, "we searched your apartment this morning."

"What did you find?"

He exchanged a glance with the child abuse investigator.

"More than we expected."

My heartbeat slowed instead of quickening.

People imagine terrible news arrives like thunder.

In reality, it often comes quietly.

One sentence at a time.

"There were surveillance cameras inside Isabella's bedroom."

I looked up sharply.

"What?"

"Two hidden cameras."

He slid printed photographs toward me.

One had been disguised inside a smoke detector.

The other behind a decorative teddy bear on a bookshelf.

My stomach lurched.

"I never installed those."

"We know."

"Who watched them?"

"We're obtaining the digital records."

His next sentence chilled the room.

"The account controlling the cameras belonged to your husband's personal email."

For several seconds I couldn't hear anything except the pounding inside my chest.

Someone had watched my daughter.

Inside her own bedroom.

While I was flying halfway around the world believing she was safe.

The forensic team recovered dozens of recordings.

Most showed ordinary moments.

Isabella sleeping.

Reading picture books.

Playing with stuffed animals.

Then the videos changed.

One clip showed Valentina storming into the room because Isabella had accidentally spilled juice on the carpet.

Without warning, she grabbed the little girl by the arm hard enough to leave bruises.

Another recording showed Isabella standing in the corner for hours.

No dinner.

No toys.

No blanket.

Every time she cried, Valentina threatened her.

"If you tell Mommy, she'll never come home."

Another video was worse.

Adrian walked into the room while Isabella reached toward him with hopeful eyes.

"Daddy..."

Before she could finish, Valentina laughed.

"Ignore her."

He did.

He turned around and walked away.

The timestamp showed it was Isabella's birthday.

The birthday I had missed because a typhoon had stranded my crew overseas.

I covered my face.

Not because I wanted to stop crying.

Because I couldn't bear to let anyone see the expression on it.

Two days later, detectives arrested Valentina.

She screamed as officers placed handcuffs around her wrists.

"This is ridiculous!"

"I'm pregnant!"

"You can't arrest a pregnant woman!"

The neighbors gathered outside the building, whispering as patrol cars filled the parking lot.

Valentina spotted me standing across the street with Isabella in my arms.

"You did this!"

"No," I answered calmly.

"You did this to yourself."

She spat toward my feet.

"You'll never prove anything!"

Sergeant Brooks held up an evidence box.

"We already have."

Inside were the hidden cameras, several memory drives, and a leather belt that matched the one in Isabella's drawing.

Valentina's face lost all color.

Adrian wasn't arrested that day.

Instead, he hired one of Miami's most expensive defense attorneys.

His public statement appeared on every local news station that evening.

"My client is the victim of an emotionally unstable spouse attempting to destroy his reputation during a custody dispute."

When I saw the interview, I almost laughed.

Custody dispute?

There was no dispute anymore.

There was only evidence.

Medical reports.

Videos.

Witnesses.

And a five-year-old girl whose silence spoke louder than any courtroom argument ever could.

That night, after Isabella fell asleep beside me in the children's hospital family suite, my phone vibrated once.

An unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Instead, I answered.

A woman's voice whispered urgently.

"Don't hang up."

"Who is this?"

"I worked as your housekeeper."

I sat upright.

"My name is Rosa."

My pulse quickened.

"I quit three weeks ago."

"Why?"

There was a long silence.

Then she said the words that changed the investigation forever.

"Because I saw what Adrian did... and I secretly recorded everything."

Outside the hospital window, thunder rolled across the Miami skyline.

For the second time in my life, a storm was coming.

This one wasn't trapping me overseas.

May you like

It was about to wash every lie out into the open.
