CHAPTER 6 — THE FLASH DRIVE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6 — THE FLASH DRIVE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

Evan didn't wait.

He carried the flash drive straight to his private office.

Detective Morales arrived ten minutes later.

Together they inserted it into a secure computer.

One folder appeared.

PRIVATE

Inside were dozens of video files.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Voice recordings.

Each file dated over the previous eighteen months.

The exact length of Evan's relationship with Celeste.

His stomach turned.

She had been documenting everything.

The first recording began.

It showed Celeste sitting alone in her car.

She didn't know the dashboard camera was still recording.

Her phone rang.

She answered without hesitation.

A man's voice filled the speakers.

"How's the billionaire?"

Celeste laughed.

"He still thinks I'm in love."

"When's the wedding?"

"As soon as the lawyers finish revising his estate plan."

"And the child?"

A pause.

Then words that made everyone in the room go still.

"I'll deal with the little girl."

"She keeps showing up where cameras are."

"If Grace gains sympathy..."

"...Evan starts asking questions."

Detective Morales froze the screen.

Grace?

Questions?

What questions?

The second recording answered them.

Six months earlier.

Another phone call.

Same male voice.

"You still haven't found the file?"

"No."

"But Grace has it."

"If she gives it to Evan..."

"...everything ends."

"What file?"

"The adoption file."

Silence.

Then Celeste whispered,

"It proves Lily belongs in that house."

Grace stared at the screen in disbelief.

"I don't understand."

"I never had any adoption file."

Morales looked at her carefully.

"Are you certain?"

Grace nodded.

"My husband handled all our paperwork before he died."

Then she stopped talking.

Her face slowly lost all color.

"My husband's safe."

"I never opened it."

Within an hour they were standing inside Grace's small rented home.

An old fireproof safe sat in the bedroom closet.

Dust covered the handle.

Grace entered the combination her late husband had written inside a cookbook years ago.

The door clicked open.

Inside were insurance papers.

Birth certificates.

A wedding album.

And one thick sealed envelope.

Addressed in handwriting.

To Evan Whitmore. Only if something happens to me.

Evan stared at the name.

His own.

He had never met Grace's husband.

Or had he?

Hands trembling, he opened the envelope.

Inside was a legal adoption file.

Hospital records.

DNA reports.

Court correspondence.

Then one photograph slipped onto the floor.

A younger Martha Whitmore...

Evan's mother...

Holding a newborn baby beside Grace's late husband.

On the back, written in faded ink, were seven words.

"Promise me they'll always stay together."

Evan looked up slowly.

His voice barely existed.

"What..."

"...does this mean?"

Detective Morales continued reading.

Then she stopped.

Completely.

Her eyes widened.

She looked at Evan.

Then at Lily, sleeping peacefully against Grace's shoulder.

Finally she whispered the words that changed every life in the room.

"She's not just connected to your family..."

"...Lily is your biological niece."

Silence swallowed the room.

Grace covered her mouth.

Evan couldn't breathe.

But Detective Morales wasn't finished.

She turned one final page.

The DNA report identified Lily's father.

Not Grace's late husband.

Not anyone they expected.

The name printed across the bottom was one Evan hadn't spoken in twenty-three years.

Daniel Whitmore.

The father who had abandoned Evan when he was twelve...

Had secretly fathered another child decades later.

Which meant someone had known the truth all along.

And someone had been willing to imprison a four-year-old...

To make sure Evan never discovered she was the last living member of his father's hidden family
