CHAPTER 4 — THE VIDEO NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO FIND

CHAPTER 4 — THE VIDEO NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO FIND

By sunrise, every major news station in Seattle was covering the story.

"The fiancée of billionaire Evan Whitmore is under investigation..."

"Questions continue surrounding allegations involving a four-year-old child..."

"...Whitmore Capital has declined further comment."

Satellite trucks crowded outside the estate.

Reporters camped behind barricades.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Inside the mansion, the silence felt heavier than the cameras outside.

Celeste had retained one of the most expensive criminal defense attorneys in the state before breakfast.

She refused further questioning.

Her only public statement contained fourteen carefully crafted words.

"I have complete faith the truth will clear my name."

The media repeated it endlessly.

Some believed her.

Many didn't.

At Seattle Children's Hospital, Lily finally slept.

For the first time in nearly twenty-four hours.

Grace sat beside the bed refusing to leave.

A pediatric psychologist gently asked what had happened inside the storage room.

Lily answered in fragments.

"The pretty lady smiled..."

"...then locked the door..."

"...she said princesses don't cry..."

"...she counted to one hundred outside..."

"...when I screamed..."

"...she laughed."

The psychologist quietly stopped taking notes.

There were moments when professional distance became impossible.

Back at Whitmore Capital headquarters, the board of directors demanded answers.

Investors were panicking.

Reporters were calling every five minutes.

One executive finally asked,

"What are we supposed to tell shareholders?"

Evan looked around the conference room.

His voice was calm.

"Tell them the truth."

"I'm cooperating with the investigation."

"My company did nothing wrong."

"If anyone believes protecting a child hurts our stock price..."

"...they're welcome to sell."

No one spoke again.

That afternoon, Detective Morales returned to the mansion.

The surveillance system bothered her.

Too many missing minutes.

Too clean.

Professional.

Someone hadn't simply unplugged a camera.

Someone had accessed the server.

The home's technology consultant arrived carrying backup drives.

"I don't understand," he admitted.

"The primary files are gone."

"But..."

He frowned.

"The automatic cloud archive shouldn't be."

He connected another hard drive.

A progress bar slowly filled the screen.

Ten percent.

Twenty-five.

Forty-eight.

Then—

A hidden backup appeared.

The detective leaned forward.

"So the footage still exists."

The technician nodded.

"Unless someone deleted the cloud copy too."

He clicked.

The recovered recording began playing.

Everyone watched in complete silence.

The timestamp read:

7:14 p.m.

Lily stood beside a hallway table holding her stuffed rabbit.

Celeste approached smiling warmly.

She crouched to the little girl's height.

No audio.

Only video.

She extended her hand.

Lily smiled back.

Took it.

They disappeared around the corner.

Next clip.

7:17 p.m.

Storage hallway.

Celeste unlocked the small room.

She looked carefully in both directions.

No one nearby.

She gently guided Lily inside.

Then—

She stepped backward.

Closed the heavy door.

Paused.

Placed her hand on the deadbolt.

Looked directly toward the hallway camera.

And deliberately turned the lock.

Click.

Even without sound...

Everyone in the room heard it.

No accident.

No misunderstanding.

No jammed lock.

A choice.

A deliberate one.

The detective immediately paused the footage.

"Zoom in."

The technician enlarged the image.

Celeste's face filled the monitor.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't frightened.

She was smiling.

A small...

Satisfied...

Smile.

Detective Morales slowly exhaled.

"We have probable cause."

She reached for her phone.

"Dispatch."

"This is Detective Morales."

"I need an arrest warrant for Celeste Harper."

But before she could finish speaking—

The technician suddenly frowned.

"Wait..."

"There's another camera."

"A blind angle."

He clicked again.

The second recording appeared.

This time...

Someone else entered the hallway thirty seconds after Celeste left.

A man wearing black gloves.

Baseball cap pulled low.

He walked directly to the storage room.

Reached into his pocket.

And slid something underneath the door.

Then he walked away.

No hesitation.

Like he'd done exactly what he'd been instructed to do.

Detective Morales stared at the frozen frame.

Evan felt a chill run through his body.

Because whatever had been pushed under that door...

Had never been found.

Which meant someone had entered the room again...

May you like

before Evan broke it open.

And suddenly, the case became far bigger than anyone had imagined.
