CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR THAT BEGAN WITH A LITTLE GIRL

CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR THAT BEGAN WITH A LITTLE GIRL

By sunrise, every major criminal organization in Chicago had heard the same message.

Not through rumors.

Not through social media.

Through the quiet channels where life-and-death decisions traveled.

Dante Vale had invoked the Blood Shield.

It was an oath older than most of the men still alive in the Vale organization.

The Blood Shield had been used only twice in forty years.

The first time, Dante's father declared it after an attack on his wife.

The second, after a bomb killed Dante's younger sister when she was ten.

Each time, the retaliation had changed Chicago's underworld forever.

Now, the same protection surrounded two people who had never asked for it.

A waitress.

And her seven-year-old daughter.

Claire Bennett nearly fainted when three black SUVs stopped outside her apartment building.

Neighbors peeked through curtains.

Children stopped riding their bicycles.

Silas stepped out first.

His black suit was immaculate, but the pistol beneath his jacket wasn't hidden very well.

He approached the front door and knocked politely.

Claire opened it only a few inches.

"I... I'm going to work."

"You aren't."

Her face paled.

"I'll lose my job."

"You already have."

"What?"

"The Bellamy Grand received anonymous threats this morning."

"If they continued employing you, the hotel would be burned."

Claire felt the blood drain from her face.

Emily appeared behind her.

"Oh!"

"It's Mr. Silas!"

She smiled as though greeting an old family friend.

Silas, who had intimidated cartel bosses without blinking, softened almost imperceptibly.

"Good morning, Emily."

"Is Mr. Dante coming?"

Silas nodded once.

"He asked me to bring you somewhere safe."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"I won't drag him deeper into this."

Silas looked at her steadily.

"Miss Bennett."

"You're already in it."

Forty minutes later...

The gates of the Vale Estate slowly opened.

Claire stared in disbelief.

She had expected a fortress.

Instead, she found something that resembled an old European manor hidden behind acres of trees.

Emily pressed her face against the window.

"It's huge!"

Silas almost smiled.

"It used to be louder."

Inside, Dante waited in the library.

Thousands of leather-bound books covered the walls.

A fireplace crackled softly.

Nothing about the room suggested the empire built within it.

Emily ran inside without hesitation.

"You got another cake?"

Claire gasped.

"Emily!"

Dante looked at the child.

"No."

"We'll fix that."

For the second time since they met...

He smiled.

While Emily explored the enormous library, Claire remained standing.

"I can't accept this."

"You already have."

"I don't belong here."

"No."

"You belong where your daughter survives."

Claire lowered her eyes.

"You don't even know us."

Dante rolled closer.

"I know enough."

"You worked sixteen hours yesterday."

"You skipped lunch."

"Your apartment has mold near the kitchen ceiling."

"You sold your wedding ring four months ago."

"You haven't bought new shoes in over a year."

Claire stared at him in horror.

"You investigated me?"

"I protect what I claim."

Tears formed in her eyes.

"No one has ever..."

She couldn't finish.

No one had ever noticed.

Dante's expression softened.

"They should have."

Across the city...

Vincent sat inside a hidden meeting with five captains.

"I didn't threaten the child."

Nobody answered.

"I said I didn't."

Captain Lorenzo finally spoke.

"Then who did?"

Silence.

One by one, every captain realized the same terrifying truth.

Someone else had infiltrated the Vale organization.

Someone with enough authority to imitate Vincent's orders.

Someone invisible.

That evening...

Dante summoned every remaining captain to the estate.

This time...

Twenty-eight invitations were sent again.

This time...

Twenty-eight men arrived.

Not because they loved him.

Because they were afraid.

The grand hall remained silent as Dante rolled to the head of the room.

No speeches.

No shouting.

He simply placed one photograph on the table.

The birthday picture.

"I invited you to celebrate my life."

"You answered with empty chairs."

He looked at each face.

"But a seven-year-old child reminded me something none of you remembered."

No one moved.

"Loyalty cannot be rented."

"It cannot be inherited."

"It is chosen."

He paused.

"So tonight..."

"I'm giving each of you the same choice."

"You may leave this family."

"No punishment."

"No revenge."

"No blood."

"Walk out now."

The room became deathly still.

Nobody expected mercy.

No one stood.

Dante nodded.

"Then understand this."

"The next betrayal..."

"Will be your last."

From the shadows of the balcony above...

An unseen figure watched every second.

A tiny camera hidden inside a decorative clock transmitted the meeting live.

Hundreds of miles away...

A gray-haired man watched the broadcast.

His face remained expressionless.

Then he whispered one name.

"Dante..."

"So you finally woke up."

He reached for an old photograph.

It showed three men standing together twenty years earlier.

Dante's father.

A young Vincent's father.

And himself.

The third founder of the Vale empire.

Officially...

He had died eighteen years ago.

May you like

But he was very much alive.

And he had been waiting for this moment.
