CHAPTER 4 – THE MAN WHO DREW A LINE NO ONE DARED CROSS

CHAPTER 4 – THE MAN WHO DREW A LINE NO ONE DARED CROSS

At 9:17 p.m., Dante's private phone rang.

Only four people possessed the number.

Silas looked at the caller ID.

Unknown.

He answered first.

Five seconds later...

His face lost all color.

"Dante."

Silas's voice was unusually tense.

"There was an attempted break-in at Emily Bennett's school."

The room became silent.

"Were they hurt?"

"No."

"The janitor surprised the intruder."

"He escaped."

Dante's hand tightened around the wheelchair armrest.

"Show me."

Within minutes, security footage appeared on the large monitor.

A hooded man.

Professional.

Disciplined.

Moving with military precision.

No hesitation.

No wasted motion.

Not a thief.

Not a random criminal.

An assassin.

The man fled before revealing his face.

But he left behind one thing.

A photograph.

The birthday picture.

Placed carefully on the classroom floor.

Like a message.

Silas exhaled slowly.

"They weren't after money."

"They were sending a warning."

Dante stared at the image.

Someone had declared war.

Not against him.

Against a seven-year-old child.

His voice became terrifyingly calm.

"Find Vincent."

Silas understood immediately.

"You think it's him."

"I know how my cousin thinks."

Silas hesitated.

"If you're wrong—"

"I'm not."

An hour later...

Vincent Vale was entertaining investors inside his Gold Coast penthouse.

The evening ended abruptly.

The electricity died.

Every light went out.

The security system failed.

Phones lost signal.

Then...

A single spotlight illuminated the dining room.

Dante rolled into the darkness.

Alone.

No bodyguards.

No weapon visible.

Vincent stood slowly.

"You've become dramatic."

"No."

"I've become disappointed."

Vincent smiled.

"You finally came begging."

Dante said nothing.

Instead...

He slid the school security photograph across the table.

Vincent glanced at it.

His smile faded.

"I didn't order this."

"You ordered something."

"I wanted pressure."

"Not murder."

Dante watched him carefully.

For the first time in years...

He believed Vincent.

Someone else had moved.

Someone more reckless.

Someone willing to ignite a war neither side wanted.

"Who benefits?" Dante asked.

Vincent answered immediately.

"Whoever wants us killing each other."

Both men fell silent.

They reached the same conclusion at the same time.

There was a third player.

One hidden since the shooting sixteen months earlier.

The person who had fired the bullet...

Might never have intended for Dante to die.

Only to weaken the Vale family until it destroyed itself.

Elsewhere...

Claire returned home after her late shift.

She unlocked her apartment door.

Something felt wrong.

Everything looked untouched.

Yet...

Emily's favorite stuffed rabbit sat on the kitchen table.

She never left it there.

Beneath the rabbit lay a folded white card.

Claire's hands trembled as she opened it.

Only one sentence.

Tell your daughter never to smile at powerful men again.

She screamed.

Neighbors rushed into the hallway.

Emily ran from her bedroom crying.

Claire grabbed her tightly.

She didn't know who had written the note.

She only knew one thing.

The danger that had followed Dante Vale into that birthday room...

Had now entered her daughter's life.

And across the city...

For the first time since the bullet shattered his spine...

Dante Vale gave an order that every captain, every rival, and every corrupt politician in Chicago would hear before dawn.

"From this moment forward..."

"Claire Bennett and Emily Bennett are under my protection."

May you like

"Anyone who touches them..."

"Declares war on the House of Vale."
