CHAPTER 7 – THE MAN BEHIND THE SHADOWS

CHAPTER 7 – THE MAN BEHIND THE SHADOWS
The countdown had begun.
Ryker doubled the security around his estate.
Armed guards covered every entrance.
Drones circled overhead.
State police waited just outside the gates.
But Ryker knew one thing.
If the enemy announced they were coming...
It meant they wanted him looking in the wrong direction.
At sunset, Harold Bennett arrived carrying one final file.
"I should have destroyed this years ago," he whispered.
Inside was a faded photograph taken at a charity gala.
Daniel Carter stood beside his wife...
Holding baby Lily and Owen.
In the background, almost hidden from view, stood another man.
Marco zoomed in.
His face turned white.
"I know him."
Ryker recognized him too.
Senator Richard Holloway.
A respected politician.
A celebrated philanthropist.
A man the entire country trusted.
Harold closed his eyes.
"Daniel discovered Holloway had been laundering billions through Carter Technologies."
"When Daniel refused to cooperate..."
"They arranged the accident."
"And Vanessa?"
"She was promised a fortune if she helped remove the children from the inheritance."
Ryker's expression hardened.
"So this was never about custody."
Harold nodded.
"It was always about money... and making sure there were no heirs left."
Just then, alarms blared across the estate.
"Boss!"
Marco shouted into his radio.
"They're not attacking the mansion!"
"They've taken the children!"
For one terrifying second...
Ryker couldn't breathe.
The security cameras showed a school van speeding away from a rear service road.
The kidnappers had disguised themselves as emergency responders during a staged power outage.
Ryker slammed his fist onto the table.
"They planned this for months."
He looked at Marco.
"Find them."
"No matter what it costs."
Two hours later...
An abandoned shipping warehouse stood silent near the Chicago docks.
Inside, Lily and Owen sat tied to chairs.
Owen whispered,
"Ryker will come."
Lily smiled through her tears.
"He always keeps his promises."
Outside...
Black SUVs surrounded the warehouse.
Ryker stepped out alone.
He wasn't carrying a weapon.
Only one sentence.
"I'm here."
"Take me."
"Let the children go."
The warehouse doors slowly opened.
May you like
A familiar voice echoed through the darkness.
"I've been waiting for you."
