CHAPTER 2 – THE PLANE NEVER TOOK OFF

CHAPTER 2 – THE PLANE NEVER TOOK OFF
The aircraft doors had already closed.
Passengers settled into their seats, headphones on, unaware that someone far more dangerous than airport security had just decided their flight would not leave the ground.
The captain's voice came over the speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the delay. We have received an urgent request from airport operations."
A murmur swept through the cabin.
In seat 3A, Vanessa Carter—the woman in the beige coat—rolled her eyes.
"Unbelievable."
She checked her watch.
Another ten minutes and Chicago would be behind her forever.
Another ten minutes and the two children she had dumped at the terminal would become someone else's problem.
She smiled.
Then three uniformed officers stepped onto the plane.
"Ma'am."
Vanessa barely looked up.
"Yes?"
"Please come with us."
Her smile disappeared.
"What for?"
"We need to ask you several questions regarding two minors."
Her heartbeat skipped.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
The officer didn't blink.
"You'll have the opportunity to explain."
Across the terminal...
Lily hadn't let go of Ryker's hand.
Not once.
The little girl's fingers were freezing.
Ryker removed his expensive wool coat and wrapped it around both twins.
It nearly swallowed them.
Marco watched silently.
He had worked beside Ryker Steel for twelve years.
He had seen his boss negotiate billion-dollar deals without changing expression.
He had watched grown men beg for mercy.
He had never...
Never...
Seen Ryker kneel to zip a little boy's jacket because the zipper kept getting stuck.
Owen looked embarrassed.
"I can do it."
"I know," Ryker said quietly.
"But you don't have to do everything alone anymore."
The boy froze.
Those words landed harder than Ryker intended.
Because Owen suddenly buried his face in the stuffed bear.
His shoulders began to shake.
Still...
He made no sound.
No crying.
Only silent trembling.
Marco turned away.
Even he couldn't watch.
Airport security arrived minutes later.
A woman wearing a navy blazer approached carefully.
"I'm with Child Protective Services."
Lily immediately hid behind Ryker.
The social worker smiled gently.
"Sweetheart, we're here to help."
Lily whispered something so quietly only Ryker heard.
"They always say that."
His jaw tightened.
How many promises had already been broken in these children's short lives?
Meanwhile...
Vanessa sat inside an interview room.
She crossed her arms.
"This is ridiculous."
"I didn't abandon anyone."
"They're my late husband's children."
"I left them somewhere safe."
One detective placed two photographs on the table.
One showed the twins sitting alone on the airport bench.
The other showed the exact minute she walked away without looking back.
"Do these look safe to you?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"They're... difficult children."
"They cry."
"They make scenes."
"I couldn't keep ruining my life."
The detective leaned forward.
"So your solution was to leave five-year-old twins alone in one of the busiest airports in America?"
Vanessa remained silent.
Then the door opened.
A tall man stepped inside.
Tailored black suit.
Steel-gray eyes.
Absolute silence followed him.
Even the detective stood.
Vanessa frowned.
"Who are you?"
Ryker closed the door behind him.
"My name doesn't matter."
"It will."
"When the judge asks who personally delivered every second of airport surveillance showing exactly what you did."
Vanessa's confidence cracked.
"You have no right—"
"I have every right."
Ryker placed another file onto the table.
It was thick.
Very thick.
"What is that?"
"Everything."
"Your bank transfers."
"Your life insurance claims."
"The sale of your husband's company shares."
"The emails you've already tried to delete."
Color drained from her face.
"How did you get those?"
Ryker smiled.
It wasn't a kind smile.
"The better question..."
He leaned closer.
"...is what else haven't you told the police?"
For the first time since boarding the plane...
Vanessa looked afraid.
Real fear.
Because she suddenly realized something.
This wasn't a wealthy businessman trying to rescue two children.
This was a man who had already started digging.
And if Ryker Steel had started digging...
He never stopped until he found every buried secret.
Back in the terminal, Lily rested her head against Ryker's shoulder.
She looked up at him with exhausted eyes.
"Are we going to be in trouble?"
Ryker gently brushed a curl away from her face.
"No."
"What happens now?"
He looked at the twins.
Then toward the interrogation room where the woman who abandoned them was finally facing justice.
His voice was calm.
But everyone around him heard the promise inside it.
"Now..."
"...you're coming home with me."
Neither Ryker...
Nor the twins...
Had any idea that by sunrise, one phone call would reveal a truth so shocking it would rewrite everything they believed about their family.
May you like
Because their father's death...
...had never been an accident.
